Researching: KURAN
Seeking information on Kuran surname. Brothers Michael or Matthew, John
and Thomas (English versions of Slovak names) left Cimhova / Liesek in 1897
for coal mines of Pennsylvania. Thomas was electrocuted at Moffitt
Sterling, Greene County, PA in 1929. John went to Canada and the family
lost track of him. Their father, in Cimhova, the Slovak Republic, had both
legs amputated at the knees. Are any of these people in your family?

Researching: OLES, KURAN, PATEK, DULK, HRKEL, SALKA, FUKAS, STOBER
Seeking information on the Oles surname. My grandmother, Maria Oles Kuran,
came to the United States in 1905 from Cimhova, the Slovak Republic with
her sister, Veronika. Veronika married Martin Patek and they returned to
Cimhova/Liesek where they had a son Martin who had a daughter Maria Dulk.
A brother Matej remained in the Slovak Republic and during the war
(1914-1918) was captured by the Russian Army. He had a son Stefan who had
three children, Vlado, Jan and Stefan. In 1923 he went to Canada where he
worked in the forests for about 10 years. Another Oles sister, Anna, also
remained in the Slovak Republic and she married a man whose last name was
Hrkel and they had two sons named Jozef and Jan. The fourth Oles sister,
Rozalia remained in the Slovak Republic where she married Jozef Salka.
They had three children, Ludovit now in California, and Irena Fukas and
Margita Stober, both in the Slovak Republic. My grandparents, Michael
Kuran and Maria Oles, remained in Fayette and Greene Counties, PA till
their deaths in 1947 and 1955, respectively. Are any of these people in
your family tree?

Researching: DESSO
My grandfather, Josef Desso, came to the US, with his brother, from Bratislava
about 1900. He settled in Osceola Mills, Center County, Pennsylvania. He
was approximately 14 years old and an orphan. He spoke Slovak. But the name
'Desso' is not remotely Slovak. Any idea? Any relatives? Any thoughts? It
has been suggested that he was possibly born of French parents but orphaned at
a young age. No clue. We need to find out as we loved him immensely.

Researching: MACKO, MACZKO, MATSKO, GROCKI, TKAC,
VANCIK, CHOMA, HOMA, DORIN, SEVCSIK, SEFCHICK
These names are associated with my Rusyn relatives. They were
all from within about a 15 Km radius of Bardejov. The surnames of Macko
(Maczko, Matsko), Tkac and Grocki are from the village of Mikulasova (Niklova),
and Visny Polianka northeast of Bardejov. Vancik (Vantsik), Choma (Homa), and
other Maczko relatives are from Krize and Livov southwest of Bardejov. The
Dorin and Sevcsik names are from Garlachov northwest of Bardejov. My father
Josef Maczko, Macko (Matsko) migrated to Pennsylvania in 1909. My mother
Juliana Vancik-Choma-Matsko migrated to the Pittsburgh area in 1920. After
marrying and moving to Southeast Ohio for a few years, they moved to Cleveland
in the 1920's. I would appreciate any information you could provide on any of
the surnames or villages.

Researching: FERENCZ, HUSSAR, SUHANIK, SUHANIC, SUJANIK, MACZIBOLA
I am trying to locate any distant relatives who may still be living in the
Zemplin area of Slovakia. My grandfather, Ondrej Ferencz, and grandmother,
Mary Hussar, were from the village of Pichne (north of Snina). My grandfather
served in the Austro-Hungarian army in 1897.
I believe my maternal great-grandmother remarried a Suhanic (Suhanik,
Sujanik). My paternal great-grandfather's name was Jan Ferencz and my
paternal great-grandmother's maiden name was Anna Maczibola.
My grandfather and grandmother came to the United States between 1899 and
1900. They settled in the north side of Pittsburgh (Ona Linda) before moving
to Monessen, PA. I plan to visit other relatives in Poland this coming
spring and would like to visit the Snina / Pichne area if possible. Any

Researching: SOJKA, SOYKA, SVERKA, TREBULAK, DIABLO, DIBILA
Researching the Sojka, Sverka, Trebulak, and Diablo / Dibila families.
Searching for information on my great-grandparent's relatives. My
great-grandmother was Katherina Soyka, born December 18, 1869. Her
father was Martin Sverka and her mother was Katie Soyka. Katherina was
from a village named Vysoka, I believe the county of Trenelin.
Katherina married Tomas Diablo or Dibila. This was his second
marriage. Tomas was from Makov, county of Trenelin, and he was born in
1865. I do not, at this time, know the name of his parents. There is a
family rumor that Tomas changed his name to Trebulak. Tomas had two
daughters from his first marriage--Mary and Vera--both are now deceased.
Tomas and Katharina came to New York around 1903. They lived in the
lower east side where most of the immigrants lived. Any information on
these surnames or villages would be greatly appreciated.
