This is an update of my 10 Feb 1998 query. All of the above are related with the possible exception of Farkas. Most of the family is from Rimbaska Sobata and came to the US on the KronPrinz Wilhelm about 1900+. I believe they settled in Allegheny, PA and moved to W. VA and OH. Many of the Chorba's are buried in Castalia, Erie Co., OH. Will share any info. Thank you.

Andrew Stancak, his wife Elizabeth Merva and a daughter, came from Spisske Podradie in 1911 and 1913. Elizabeth had a brother who, because of "poor eyes", went to South America, being turned away from the US. I am looking for information on the Merva family.

I am searching for the Surnames of Jurcsak, Jursak, Basca, Baska. The Jurcsaks came from the village of Hnilcik in Eastern Slovakia. My grandfather's name was Samuel and he had aboout 11 brothers and sisters. I am looking for the sisters who were in Virden IL., with the married names of Sholtis, Kacir, and Opremchak. We have lost track if them. The Basca family came from Beharovce in Spis county. Josef was my grandfather and Susanna Kostlik was my Grandmother. Grandmother, Catherine Stanislav, was born 16 November 1875, the daughter of Joannes Stanislav, born circa 1850, and Maria Jurek, born circa 1854. Michael Stanislav and Josef Fiffick were witnesses at the wedding of Joannes and Maria. The family lived at Koterbach #45 at the time of her birth. Koterbach is now known as Rudnany. Catherine was baptised at Saint Demetrius Greek Catholic Church in Porac, Slovakia on 21 November 1875. Joannes died on 28 March 1880 at age 30 and Maria married Michael Maxim, born circa 1860, brother of Joseph Maxim, shown at the left in a circa 1920 photo, and son of Joannes Maxim, on 08 October 1883. Witnesses for the marriage of Michael and Maria were Peter Krajnak and and Joseph Vansuch. Both marriages took place in Porac, Slovakia at Saint Demetrius Greek Catholic Church. Catherine married at age 17 in Brockport, Pennsylvania, so the family must have arrived in America prior to 1892. I am also looking for additional family information and information on the Puyda or Pujda family.

Researching: SUCHKA, FEDERONICH
I am a second generation Ruthenian in the U.S. who is looking for information on Suchka and Federonich. My grandfather George Suchka and grandmother Anna (Federonich) Suchka, were married in Ruthenia. Both are now deceased. They probably lived in a village called Velikie Koponi, map coordinates 4630 N and 3300 E, then in the Austro-Hungarian empire, which apparently is now in the Ukraine. They were Greek Byzantine Catholic, and we have a photo of my grandfather in military uniform having, I heard, served under Franz Josef. I have my mother's prayer book that she and they used some years after my grandparents arrived in the U.S. The title of the book is Prayer Book for Greek Catholic Rusins of America, printed in Braddock, PA. The prayer book is written both in English and in either Ruthenian or Old Church Slavonic. I am having letters, that my grandfather received from a distant cousin from this village in the early 1960s, translated from Ruthenian to English. It is so good to have a Rusyn data base. I have been trying for years to find out more about our family, as my several aunts and uncles and my mother have not been as interested in pursuing this. My uncle said we were probably Carpatho-Russian, but that was pretty vague for me. Thank you so much.

Looking for family in the towns of Vlachy and Secovce in the Slovak Republic, and Okres Melnik and Hostin u Vojkovic in the Czech Republic. My father is John G Lesko, born in Windber PA July 1, 1909. He married Mildred Shimko, born October 27, 1913. They were married in Windber PA on April 13, 1937. The best man was Joe Sabo, and the Maid of Honor was Mildred's sister, Elizabeth "Bessie" Shimko Conjelko. There were 7 children, John, James, Joseph, Barbara, Michael, Peter, and Bernadette. He died May 17th, 1964. Mildred Lesko died January 5, 1998. John G Lesko's father was born around 1882, and his birthplace is the town of Spisske Vlachy in eastern Slovak republic. I have his will, made in Windber, October 26, 1911, which states that he was a member of the First Catholic Union, and the Slavonic Lodge of America. His name is spelled Leshko in the will. I think that John Lesko was previously married to Maria Macej, Linglar, Saris, in 1906, and had a daughter named Helen. John G Lesko's mother was Mary Stefanko Lesko. She was born in Austria August 28 1882 and died in Windber PA on 5 May, 1952. She was previously married to a man named Vlasac. She came to the United States on 1899, and came to Windber in 1901. She raised two girls, Helen Lesko Sura, 1906-1984, and Anna Lesko, 1903-1928, and John. She had a brother Peter Stefanko, and a sister . She was the daughter of John and Anna Sepec Stefanko. My mother is Mildred Shimko Lesko, born in Windber PA, 26 Oct, 1913. She was the daughter of Michael Shimko, 19 Feb, 1878 to 27 Dec, 1952, and Mary Shipek Shimko, 9 Sept, 1884 to 11 Oct 1962 Michael Shimko's mother was Maria Shemulak from Secovce, Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. Mary Shipek's mother was Ann Polivka Shipek from Hostin u Vojkovic, also in the Czech Republic. Her father was Felix Shipek Their children were Elizabeth "Bessie", Anne, Lillian, Michael, John, and Mary Ann. She had a brother Charles Shipek, and his children were Charles, Lillian, Elizabeth, Ellen, Joe, and Edward. Michael Shimko and Mary Shipek were married 14 June, 1902 in St Nicholas Church in Duquesne, PA. Mary Shipek was a niece of Rev. Damascene Polivka from Bohemia, who served as the first pastor of "The First Slavish United St. Mary's Greek Rite Catholic Church" in Windber, PA from 1900 to 1904.

Researching: GOJDICS, GOIDICH, GOYDICH, GOJDIC, JANOVICH, JANOVICS
The Gojdics were from Vyrava, Zemp and many other villages all over Slovakia. They were priests and cantors and seemed to move around a lot. My Grandfather was Rev. Elias Gojdics and came to the US in 1903. He died in Farrell, PA. His family was from Vyrava, Zavadka, Spis, in Mikohaza, Zemp. He is related to Bishop Paul Gojdics. Any information at all on the Gojdics will be appreciated. Also researching anyone with the Janovics name. They were from Circ, Saros, but moved around a great deal. Most of them were Greek Catholic priests and went wherever they were sent. I don't know of any that came to the US and am hoping someone here knows something about them. Many of them were judges and civil servants. They received a lesser nobility in Circ in 1703. Any ideas?

Moritz Brichta married Rosalia Hause. They had possibly three children, Malvine, Maximilian and one more. Malvine married and moved to Budapest. She possibly had children, Villa and Franciska. Maximilian was in the Austro-Hungarian cavalry until his capture. He was part of a failed effort to overthrow the Russian government and was jailed. He married Regina Lustig. He became a shopkeeper, magician and author. He lived in Zilina, Bratislava and Cesky Tesin in Slovakia. He disappeared on his way to the train station in Bratislava in 1942. Looking for relatives or any information on the Brichta family.

Looking for information on family name. John Bajusz is from Timisoara, Romania. Mother's name, Maria Behun, is from Munkacs, Ukraine (I think!). They arrived in NYC in 1930,had two sons, John and Gabriel. Note: the name of mother's town in Russian was spelled Mukachevo. In Hungarian, it is Munkacs. I am looking for information on the families Fulda and Danko. George Danko of Slovakia married Anna Fulda (Furda) of Trebisov, Slovakia. They were later divorced. They had a daughter, Maria Rosalia, who married Michael Balaz of Rebrin. They also had a daughter named Barbara, who was unmarried. I would like to know more about the siblings and parents of George and Anna. Also, Michael Balaz (Balash), was my Grandfather. My Great Grandfather, Pavol (Paul) Balaz married his second wife, Zuzanna Kosco (Kosci). They had two daughters and my Grandfather, Michael. The Balaz family moved to Romania for awhile. I am searching for American families related to Maria Koczakova of Gbely, Slovakia. Maria married Stefan Polacek in Gbely. They came to America, he is 1887, she in 1888. They lived in the Duluth, Minnesota area. Her sister, Jana Koczakova-Seipold, lived in Minneapolis. I can find no information about the surviving brother, Jan Koczak. Did he also come to America? I can find no information about the mother, Anna Blatnicova- Koczak. Others on the maternal side are: Martinkovicova, Pucekova, Rozborilova, Lorencova.

I am looking for relatives in the USA. My forefather, Michal Kusnir, was born 9/08/1832 in Hrusov. His father was Johannes Kusnir and mother, Zuzana Maingut. Michal Kusnir married Elizabeth Burlyasz from Domanovce. They had four children: Michal, b. 1867, sp. Podhradie; Stefan, Martin and Maria. Michal was married in 1890 to Maria Baluch, daughter of Paulus Baluch, born Beharovce, Dubrava, and Maria Tabak, b. 1839, sp. Podhradie. Many brothers and sisters have left from Slovakia to the US.
