Researching: SIMALA, KOZAK
Searching for relatives of Ignac Simala (pronounced Shimala in Slovak - the
"S" written with the diacritical mark on top of it giving it the "sh"
sound), born in Lipnica Wielka in 1891 and immgrated to the U.S. circa 1905
via Philadelphia, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. (Lipnica Wielka was one of
20 odd Slovak towns which were annexed by Poland in 1920.) Ignac's (also
known as James in this country) wife was surnamed Kozak, and between them
they had three boys: James; Charles; and Florian, Sr. (the undersigned's
father who was born in 1918). All are now deceased. Little is known of
Ignac Simala's family in the Old Country or relatives who came to the U.S.
It is said Ignac's youngest son Florian, Sr. was named after an uncle who
was a priest. Ellisislandrecords.com lists a Florian Simala (not Florian,
Sr.) who came to the U.S. in 1905 at four years of age. It is possible this
could have been the uncle. From the immigration records it appears that
Milka Simala could be this Florian Simala's mother.

Researching: BEDNAR, HRITZ, LISKO, UHIREN, MATTIS, MELEKIN
My grandfather's parents - John Bednar and Anna Hritz - both came from
Slovakia in 1891. They arrived in New York where they met. John Bednar's
three sisters were already in America - Maria Bednar Kohan, Katherine Bednar
Lisko, and Veron or Rachel Uhiren. I believe that Veron Uhiren returned to
Slovakia to bring their mother back to the U.S. I have located the 1899
ship's manifest which lists Maria Bednar and Veron Uhiren. Their home
village was listed as Kotterbach. My grandfather remembers his parents
speaking of Kotterbach and Spis. Anna Hritz came to the U.S. alone, but she had 2 sisters who were already
here. Anna's brother remained in Slovakia. I do not know the first names of
these sisters, but one of them married a Mathis/Mattis and the other one
married a Melekin. These sisters both lived in Illinois - one in Springfield
and one in Chicago. I would truly appreciate hearing from anyone who might have more information
about either of these families.

Simkos was at her own mother's funeral in 1956. Helen Simko Miller and Vera
Simko Sivins (sisters) were cousins to Mary Mihalenko and would have been in
their early forties at the time. All family contacts were lost after my
mother's father died the following year. If you know /knew either of these
two women or have a familial connection to any of the aforementioned names or

Researching: OBERLEOVA, VASIL, VASILOVA, GOREY
In my search for my roots I have obtainted a copy of a photograph from the mayor of Nizna
Mysla, taken early in this century, that says the following in Slovak. These are relatives of
Alzbeta[Elizabeth] Oberleova, maiden name Vasilova. Their names, the people in ihe photo,
were Gorei[Gorey] or Vasil. Photo was taken in Somerville NJ The photo is of an elderly
women and a young man and women. I believe my root surname is Vasil. I also found a card
in my grandmothers prayer book that led me to a Michael Gorey who came to the US in 1910.
Became a priest and died in Baltimore in the middle 20`s. Records indicate his mother
eventually went back to Slovakia. The priest lived in Raritan NJ attended St Josephs
Church and also at one time lived in Lansford. Pa. If any one has any connections to the
3 names contact me. Vasil is Vaszily in Hungarian. My grandmothers maiden name was
possibly Ivan. She died in 1929 in Bound Brook NJ. I was born in 1920 in that town.

Researching: DEMCHIK, REDOVIAN, PADLO, PADLA, BLASCHACK
I am trying to fin out if there are any Demchik relatiuons left in Slovakia. Father's
name was Josef Demchik. He came to America in or around 1915 . His village was supposedly
(Bwasna). I am not too sure of the spelling of that name, but that is what it sounded like.
Also the spelling of Demchik could be quite different than the American version.
Mother's name was Mary Redovian (I know this was spelled a little differently but am not sure
what it was). She came from Cervenie Skala(Red Rock) on the river Hron. They lived in
Telgart for awhile. She said that is where the records were kept. They had one son,
Josef, who died there in Slovakia before Bubba could come over to America
He would have been 6 years old around 1922 or 23. We would like to know where he was buried.
And if there are any relations left there. I know there must be some, because Bubba
had a sister, Ella, who stayed there and was married. Also we are looking for a man and
wife, Lazar Padlo(a ) and Magdalena Blaschack that came over to America around 1919 for
the man and 1923 for the woman. We would like to find out what village they were from.
Lazar was born April 15,1891. We do not have a date for Magdalena. Anything you can
help us with will be greatly appreciated.

Researching: MATLACH, MATLOCK, KONTRO
I'm looking for more information about my Slovak Great-grandfather, John
Matlock (Matlach), especially the village where he was from.
He was most probably born as Jan (Johannes) Matlach. He was naturalized
into the U.S. in 1941 (Naturalization # 5094537). The country he was
naturalized from according to this document is Czechoslovakia. He was sixty
one years old then, so we know that he was born in 1880 (maybe 1879 or
1881). He is named John Matlach on the naturalization papers. Steve
Matlach's birth certificate (John's son)(St. Stanislaus Roman Cath. Chrch
Cleveland, OH, document dated 1925) refers to all of the family members as
'Matlach' as well. John died in Cleveland, OH sometime around 1945-1955.
His wife's name was Mary Matlach (nee. Kontro), and she died in 1925, in
Cleveland, OH. They lived in West Virginia for a time, but primarily lived
in Cleveland, OH. John was a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian Army probably around the years
1888 - 1905, according to family history. Family history says that he came
from a village near Bratislava in western Slovakia (Pressburg was the German
name of Bratislava, at that time).
I have read that the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna (the Army Archives), has only
documents about soldiers that came from present-day Austria. The old
District Military Archives, like Bratislava, that weren't Austrian after
WWI, probably destroyed all of the Austrian records.
At this time, we don't have an exact village name where John Matlach came
from, so I think that finding this information is the first priority. A
starting point would be to get our hands on either Great-Grandpa John's
birth certificate, death certificate, or his Austrian Army records.
Quite honestly, the village could have been in either present day Slovakia,
Austria, Czech Republic or even Hungary. Because, Bratislava is right on
all of those borders! It's hard to say whether Great-Grandpa John considered himself to be Slovak,
Czech, Hungarian, Austrian or Ruthenian. His ethnicity was probably
Slovakian or possibly Austrian. According to family legend he could speak a
language similar to Polish, which Slovakian was.
However, Matlach is a much more Germanic (ie. Austrian) name than it is
Slovakian. Because he was in the Austrian army, of course he spoke German,
too. (I remember one of my Grandfather Steve Matlock's favorite things to
call us kids, was "Dumnkopf". This is German, it means, "Dummy"). It could
have been passed down from his father, John.
Of course, it is just as likely that the surname could have once been,
Matlak (which is a fairly popular Slovak name), and later changed Matlach,
to be a little more Germanic, as Slovakia was part ot the Austro-Hungarian
Empire for a very long time. He was probably not Hungarian, because that language is nothing like Polish,
and also the name Matlach is not Hungarian at all.
See more on this family tree on the Ancestry World tree on Ancestry.com
Any advice or input would be most appreciated.
