Researching: SZEDLAK, MAGYAR
Both grandparents came over in 1890 from Hungary. Believe ancestors
lived in Brezovicka or Drienov. Grandfather was Estovan Szedlak and
grandmother was Barbara Magyar. We think they met on the boat.
Estovan worked in the steel mills and died when dad was 4 years old.
So we have no contact with ancestors. I found many Szedlak's came
from Brezovicka and Drienov prior to 1890 from the
Brezovicka and Drienov
pages here. Any additional info will be appreciated.

Baldinger (born 1880). Know connections between Baldingers and Rosenzweigs

Researching: DANKO, DANKOCIK, DLUSANIN, PERHACH,
SEMAN, SEMANICIN, SMOLIGA, SZEMAN, VADZITA, WADZITA, ZALEPA
I am researching the Danko, Dankocik, Dlusanin, Perhach, Seman, Semanicin,
Smoliga, Szeman, Vadzita, Wadzita, and Zalepa families.
My paternal grandparents, Michael Seman, and Maria (Perhach) Zalepa came to
the United States in 1903 from Cemerne, Zemplin Zupa, Austria-Hungary and
settled in Whiting, Indiana. Immigration documents show the family name
variously as Semanicin (son of Seman), and Szeman (the magyarized spelling of
the family name). My maternal grandparents, Michael (Dlusanin)
Vadzita/Wadzita and Maria (Smoliga) Dankocik/Danko came to the United States
in 1910 from Kusin, Ung Zupa, Austria-Hungary, settling eventually in
Coalton, Illinois. Michael was originally from Valaskovce and Maria may have
been from the Ukraine near Uzgorod. Thus far my research indicates that all
of these families were Carpatho-Rusyn.

Researching: KARKOSIAK
My great grandfather Daniel Karkosiak was born 29 Oct 1866. Family legend says
that he was a Jewish child whose village was invaded by the Turks. Many
people were murdered, and infant Daniel was left for dead. He was later
discovered alive, taken to an orphanage, and adopted by people named "Karkosiak"
from the nearby town of Nizna Boca. Does this sound reasonable to anybody
who knows the history of the area? How could I ever trace the story? Does
anybody know anything about Nizna Boca in central Slovakia?

Researching: OLENIK, HORVAT, MAJERNIK, DVORNCIKY,
RAKOCY
My great aunt died recently and I found out the village her and her brother,
my grandfather, came from. My grandfather was Joseph Horvat and my great aunt
was Helen Horvat Olenik. Their parents were Michael and Katherine
Majernik Horvat. My great aunt was born in Spisska Nova Ves. I am also
researching my father's family.
I have further information as my research continues. I found my father's birth
certificate which states my grandfather's birthplace as Chavnik,Spisska Zupa,
as compared to Scavnik, which was on my grandfather's obituary. I also found
out that my grandmother, Catherine Dvornciky Rakocy, was born in Hranovnica.
They were supposed to live in near-by villages. I found Hranovnica on the
Bartholemew Slovakia map. The nearest village which is spelled anywhere near
Scavnik,is Spissky Stiavnik. I wonder if that's the right place. Have
place-name spellings changed from the Hungarian through the current day?

Researching: VALACHOVIC, KUCERKA, HARENKA, MAJCIN,
GAJDOS, PALKOVIC, PALKA, MICHALIN, DUAPA, OPOLCAN, FRANKO
Those searching for information on relatives should be aware that in some
areas where the family name is the same, a blood relationship may not
exist. Additional family names are given too. This is the case in Kuty as
Valachovic may be Kucerka, Harenka, Majcin, or Gajdos. Palkovic may be
Palka, Michalin or Duapa. This applies for many names. Those Slovaks who
settled in the United States in groups brought with them their local
colloqualisms and customs. Therefore your grandfather may have been known
locally as only by his family name before he left for a new area and is not
remembered by his real name. My grandfather came from Leopoldov, was given
a new name by Kucani, and is known to some as Mike Opolcan instead of
Mike Franko. Some did not know his real surname. If you know a different
surname, include it in your search request.

Researching: GREGOR
I am trying to do a family tree. I want to go as far back as I can. When I
get to my Grandfather I can't go any farther because My Grandfather,
James Gregor Sr., came to America all by himself in 1921. He was born in
1903. He died a Long time ago so I don't know anything about his family.
My dad told me he had a brother named John Gregor. He came from
Czechoslovakia by boat. He got his ticket from the Royal Steam Packet
Company. He bought the ticket 25 July 1921. The ticket Says his name is
Vaclav Gregor. So James Gregor is probably the American name. His address
in Czech is also on it, but it is in a different languge. I think this is
what it is "Rac'ice cis 34 pp. Skutic Kraj ch'audrui Czechosloxak'ia". The
ticket says when he gets to New York he will go to Omaha Nebraska. I don't
know why. The address in Nebraska is 5414 So. 19 St. Omaha, Nebraska. The head
office for the company when he bought the ticket was 18 Moorgate Street,
London England. I think I have his birth records, passport, and some other
documents but I don't know what they say. Because they are from Czechoslovakia.
He married Stella Mycek. He became a citizen 18 March 1931. By that time he
lived in Chicago. I Found out that his Parents names where Marie Talasko and
John Gregor from his death certificate. They never came to America. If you
think you know anything please e-mail me.
