Lansingville is an ethnic neighborhood on Youngstown's South Side bounded by Indianoloa Avenue (formerly called Japan prior to World War II), Campbell Street and Poland Avenue to the north, Craiger Avenue and Shirley Road to the east, Midlothian Boulevard to the south, and Homestead Street and Gibson Avenue to the west.
Lansingville, named for John Lansing, was a predominantly Slovak Catholic area with some Germans and Italians. It is now racially mixed with many Slovaks still living in the area.
Lansingville grew rapidly to the south and west in the late 1800's and early 1900's as Slovak immigrants moved to the area to work at the steel mills along the Mahoning River to the north of Lansingville.
The original Saint Matthias Church on Homewood Avenue was torn down and new church built on Cornell Avenue. Lansingville United Presbyterian Church was torn down for the 680 freeway that cuts across the northern boundary of Lansingville and then along what was Pine Hollow Park to Midlothian on the south.
Stores like Phelan Pharmacy and Polansky's Market on Indianola Avenue served as neighborhood shopping areas. The Castle restaurant at the intersection of Poland Avenue and Center Street is a landmark for the area. Adam's School is another landmark, and the area takes in Pemberton Park.
It was a neighborhood tradition for the citizen's of Lansingville to sweep the sidewalks and streets in front of their homes weekly. The Lansingville Ladies Political Club has been around for many years.
Lansingville was incorporated into Youngstown in the 1880's.
Many of the early immigrant residents of Lansingville are buried at Lake Park Cemetery on Midlothian Boulevard, across the street from the southern boundary of Lansingville.
