The book Church in Ruins by Oleh Wolodymyr Iwanusiw illustrates the present condition of churches of the Ukrainian Catholic (Byzantine Rite) Rite Eparchy of Peremyshl, the part of which territory fell within the boundaries of present day Poland.

If you have Lemko or Boyko roots in the lands to the northeast of the present Slovak border, this is a must have book.

While a few of the churches are recognized and protected as architectural antiques by Polish Museums, and others have been acquired and are cared for by the Polish Roman Catholic Church, the majority of the churches were destroyed and no longer exist.

The author attempted to visit every one of the 690 churches in some 650 municipalities. His pictoral record is shown on the pages of this publication.

In the book you will find illustrated some fine examples of Lemko and Boyko wooden sacral architecture, as well as the painful remnants of churches that have been destroyed.

The photos of the churches, shown in full color, are organized by Deaneries of the Eparchy of Peremyshl. Most photos were taken circa 1985.

With each photo depicted, you will find a brief history and or description of the church in both English and Ukrainian.

There is also a section in the back of the book with line drawings of some churches and a listing of churches that no longer exist.

A history of the Eparchy in English and a full listing of all the Bishops of the Eparchy adds much to the importance of the book as a reference work.

Include with the book is a 18 inch by 30 inch map of the Eparchy of Peremyshl showing the location of all the churches listed in the book.
