Prodigal Son Pin

Everyone at the Divine Liturgy on February 13, 1999 received a pin from Bishop Basil Schott and the Eparchy of Parma.

The pin, shown at the left, ties in with Bishop Basil's Lenten message to the faithful.

We will also be giving out a special Holy Icon Card and prayer in celebration of the Millenium.

Prayer to God the Father

Father in heaven, from you all fatherhood in heaven and on earth derives its name, holy be your name.

You loved the world so much that you sent your only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him might have life everlasting.

In the River Jordan and on the Tabor mountain you revealed Jesus our Lord to be your Son from all ages, the Anointed Savior, the reflection of your glory and the very imprint of your being.

In him we have all been adopted as your children and in the power of the Spirit dare to call you Abba, Father.

From you, O compassionate and forgiving Father, proceeds the all-holy, good and life-creating Spirit. We pray you at this opportune time to fill us with your Spirit, renewing us and the whole face of the earth as we journey ever closer to the fullness of your kingdom.

May your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, for you are the one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

You know all that we need, feed our souls and bodies and, through your Spirit, lead us into the land of righteousness, bring healing to the sick, break the chains of slavery and oppression, bring to nothing the shame of poverty, unite all those who believe in your name, free us from the snares and conceit of the evil one, that, as we dare call you Father, we may be revealed to be children of the light and of the day, reborn in Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

POPE IN SAINT LOUIS

This was the first visit of a reigning Pope to Saint Louis.

Lillian and Stan Musial were selected to be part of the official welcoming committee. Father Joseph Weber was one of the Masters of Ceremonies for the Papal Mass at the TWA Dome. Father Paul Niemann was part of the prayer service at the Cathedral Basilica. Bishop Andrew Pataki was at the main altar for the Papal Mass.

MILLENIUM BANNER

The Eparchy of Parma Millenium Banner arrived in Saint Louis in December.

To remind us of our preparation for the third millenium, our parish will begin displaying the banner of the millennium with the international logo of the millenium.

The Greek cross is inscribed in a circular blue field which symbolizes the universe and the need for solidarity.

The cross sustains and upholds humanity gathered in the continents represented by the five doves.

The cross is the same colors as the doves signifying the Incarnation whereby god enters into human history and redeems it.

The light which comes from the center of the design represents Christ who is the light of the world.

The colors of the logo remind us that joy and peace are an integral part of the Jubilee celebration.

SLAVONIC DIVINE LITURGY

The Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Choir of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has released a video of the Divine Liturgy in Slavonic. Visit the Holy Ghost Choir page for more information and ordering instructions.

CANDLES IN CHURCH

The candles burning on the altar represent the non-created Light of the Trinity, for the Lord dwells in unapproachable light. They also represent the fire of Divinity which destroys our ungodliness and sins.

The candles lit before the icon of Our Savior signify that He is the True Light who enlightens every man who comes into the world; at the same time, He is a fire which engulfs and revives our souls and bodies.

The candles lit before the icons of the Theotokos are a symbol of the fact that she is the Mother of the Unapproachable Light, and they stand as a symbol of her pure and burning love for God and her love for mankind.

The candles lit before the icons of the saints reflect their ardent love for God for whose sake they gave up everything that man prizes in life, including their own lives. They also signify that these saints are lamps burning for us and providing light for us by their saintly lifestyle, their virtues and their ardent intercession for us before God through their constant prayers.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Heavenly King, divine Breath, Life-Creator,

You renew the face of the earth. Come now in your mighty power and make all things new. Come now and do wondrous deeds for the cause of truth and justice and right. Wash the deserts of unbelief with the waters of baptism. Strengthen the faith of those who have become weak in zeal for the ways of righteousness. Free those held in bondage by unclean spirits. Replace hearts of stone with hearts of flesh capable of love for all that you have created.

Advocate, Spirit of wisdom and understanding, Spirit of counsel and strength, Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord, come, be with us always, do not leave us orphans. As you convict the world of its sin and burn the chaff of evil-doing with your unquenchable fire, do not leave us, your unworthy and sinful servants, deprived of your heavenly gifts, but show us the path we should walk and guide us on level ground.

Yes, 0 Spirit of truth, give us spiritual enlightenment, that we may not fall into the pit of ignorance and foolishness, but may live as children of the light that produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Never allow us to deceive or abuse one another in word or deed or thought, that our eyes may be open to your presence everywhere, filling all things. Make us worthy to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus our Lord.

Come and dwell within us and cleanse us of all stain, and save our souls, 0 gracious Lord.
