Researching: POKORNY
My great grandmother was Sadie Pokorny. She lived in Brooklyn, NY, born around 1860.
Her maiden name is unknown. She married a man whose real surname is unknown. He came to New Orleans as
a child and was taken in by a family whose last name was Pokorny, so he took that name.
I don't know how he made his way to Brooklyn. My grandmother was Rose Pokorny, born in Brooklyn in 1899. She had 3 siblings, Arthur, Nathan, and Ruth. Rose married John Herman in NY and they later moved to the Detroit area where my father, Don Herman, was born in 1928. John Herman was born in Russia to Annie and Herman Paddy. When he was born the official asked Annie the baby's name and she replied "John."
Then the official asked the name of the baby's father and she replied "Herman."
Somehow my grandfather's name on his birth certificate came out as John Herman. He made his
way to England, then Canada, then New York, where he met my grandmother.
