Researching: JANOS
I am looking for information on my grandfather, Stephen G. Janos, who arrived as a 6-8 year old child at Ellis Island on the F. Missler Bremen. All I have is the linen packet from the trip. I assume it is a wallet for money and passport. One one side it says: F. Missler, Bremen Bahnhofstrasse 30. Passagier - Annahme fur die Schnelldampfer nach Amerika Bank und Geldwechsel. The other side of the wallet shows the picture of the ship. I do not know the date of arrival except he was born July 28, 1891 so I would assume that it would of been 1897-9. His parents were John and Mary Janos and went to Pennsylvanis for a while before settling in northern Wisconsin. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am just beginning to research my maternal line and would welcome information on any of the above surnames. My mother's immediate family settled in the Waterloo, Wisconsin (Jefferson County) area, beginning in the 1850s. I have very little information other than my mother's parents (Frank Peschel and Mathilda Arnold), and that the mother of one of them may have been Barbara Meixner and/or Barbara Matzke. My mother was born in 1914. Her father arrived in the U.S. as a young child, probably in 1880s. Her mother was born in the U.S. in the 1880s.

Researching: PISKLAK, HOLUB, SILVA
Joseph Pisklak, from Hovezi, Moravia, came to Galveston and settled in Latium, Texas. He paid for cousin Paul's passage, along with Paul's wife, Frantiska, who came in 1890 with four daughters, Louisa, Theresa, Mary, and Frances. Paul's sister also came and settled near Plum, Tx. Paul and Frantiska settled in Latium, and had two more children, Annie and Edward. They farmed for Joseph for two years. Joseph's son, Emil, came later with his wife Rosalie and they lived in Latium. I believe Martin Pisklak, of Hovezi, is Paul's father. Paul and Frantiska Pisklak moved to Oldenburg, Texas, and met Joe Holub. Joe Holub owned 300 acres in Wallis, TX, and convinced Paul to rent some land from him and farm cotton. So Paul and family moved to Wallis. Paul's son, Ed, married Sofie Holub, Joe Holub's daughter. Paul's daughter, Frances, also married a Holub boy. Frances and her husband ended up in Bay City, Texas. Annie, Paul's youngest daughter, married Emil Sliva, whom she met in Wallis. They too moved to Bay City (following Frances, whom Annie was very close to). Of Paul and Frantiska's other children: Ed ended up in Brazoria; Mary, near Needville; Theresa and Louisa, in La Grange or Plum. Paul's youngest daughter, Annie, was my grandmother, so I'll continue with her descendants. Her children were Marie, Sylvester, Benjamin, Gilbert, Emil Jr., Carmel, Gertrude, Anne, Frank, and Florence. Frank is my father. I would like to share what info I have, and would like any info on Pisklaks that anyone has to add.

I am researching for information on the Mika family. In particular, my father was born in Michalovce in 1920 and I am looking for any information on his ancestry. His father's name was Michael Mika (1886 - 1955) and his mother's name was Mary Petronic (1895 to 1947). He had an uncle, Andrew (1889 - 1947) and a brother, John (1930 - ?). I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who can tell me about what Michalovce was like then and how it is now.

Researching: PIVONKA, KROJHER
My great grandmother was Christina Pivonka, born abt. 1870, in Iowa. Her parents were Josef Pivonka and Teresa Krojher. I'm told she was Bohemian, however, I haven't seen either of these surnames on your list. Unfortunately, this is the extent of my info. Any ideas? Could these names have been changed somewhat in the translation? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Researching: SCHOVAJSA, OLEJNIK, GERZA, SISA, MIKESKA, BALUSEK, KUDLACOVA, SCASTA
I am researching the following branches of my family: Frantisek Schovajsa (b.?;d.?, Moravia) married Rozina Gerza (b.?;d.?, Moravia). They had at least 2 children: Jan (b. about 1830, Moravia; d. about 1877-1878, Rakova, Moravia), Joseph (b. February 15, 1845, Moravia), Jan Schovajsa married (1.) Theresa Janulova (b. Moravia; d. before 1869, Moravia). They had at least 4 sons: John, Joe, Frank, and Tom. It is thought that all 4 sons came to Texas in the 1880's. Tom married Anna Scasta, a step-daughter of his step-mother, Anna Sisa. Jan Schovajsa married (2.) Anna Sisa (b. December 11, 1937, Narozena, Okres Vizovice, Moravia, d. January 20, 1920, Texas) about 1869 in Moravia. This marriage produced 4 children: 2 died at birth or in infancy, Anna (b. January 18, 1870, Rakova, Moravia; d. December 23, 1958 in Texas): George Sam (b. May 12, 1871, Rakova, Moravia; d. May 12, 1939, Miles, Runnels County, Texas). Anna Sisa was the daughter of Frantisek Sisa (b. Moravia) and Anna Mikeska (b. Moravia). Frantisek and Anna had at least 6 daughters. Anna Sisa married (2.) John Scasta (b. Moravia; d. May 23, 1886, Brno (Steep Hollow), Texas). Anna Sisa Schovajsa Scasta, her children, step-children, several of her sisters and John Scasta and his children immigrated to the US in 1880. They landed first at New York on May 12, 1880 and probably secondly at Galveston, Texas. George Sam Schovajsa married Rosalie Olejnik (b. July 26, 1874, Rakova, Moravia, d. April 24, 1927, Miles, Runnels County, Texas) January 30, 1894 in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. They had 10 children, 9 of whom who lived to adulthood. Rosalie Olejnik was the daughter of Jan Olejnik (b. September 2, 1845, Rakova or Zadverice, Moravia, d. May 1928, Miles, Runnels County, Texas) and Theresa Balusek (b. November 26, 1844, Rakova or Zadverice, Moravia, d. October 8, 1904, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas). Jan had a brother, Jiri (George) (b. 1831, Moravia, d. June 13, 1901, Kansas). Jan and Theresa had 4 children; 2 born in Moravia and 2 born in Kansas. Jan and Theresa came to America in 1880. The Olejnik's first settled in Topeka, Kansas and 8 years later they moved to the Bryan, Brazos County, Texas area where they had relatives. Theresa Balusek was the daughter of Jan Balusek (b. Moravia) and Marianna Kudlacova (b. Moravia). Jan and Marianna had at least 3 children. Their daughter, Anna, married John Scasta, the 2nd husband of Anna Sisa. Joseph Schovajsa married Anna Mikeska (b. December 23, 1847 in Moravia). Anna was the daughter of Josef Mikeska and Rozina Kudlacek. Joseph and Anna had at least 1 son, Jan M. (b. March 21, 1869 in Moravia; d. 1935 in Texas). Jan M. Schovajsa married Frances Rafaj (b. May 5, 1877 in Moravia, d. 1941 Texas) in Texas. He was naturalized in 1904. Frances was a niece of Anna Sisa who married Jan Schovajsa, his uncle. Jan and Frances had 6 children, all born in Texas. Of the 6 I only have information on Emil. Any and all information on the ancestors or siblings of these people would be greatly appreciated. I will share any information that I have.
