Researching: MISTR, MISTROVA, PRUCHA
Franz Mistr and his family arrived in the states on 30 Aug 1869 aboard the Hansa from Bremen, Germany. The passenger list has their home as Bohemia. One of Franz Mistr's daughters, Emily Mistr, is my grandmother. She was born in Silver Lake, MN. Before 1904 the family moved to Prince George County, Virginia. Emily said her family was Moravian. My grandfather, John Prucha, proposed to my grandmother in a letter while she was doing church work in Toledo, OH. He must have met her while she trained at what became the Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work in Cleveland, OH. I have a copy and translation of her very formal 1894 response. I just recently discovered it in a big box of old letters.. She signed her letter Emily Mistrová (NOTE: Mistrova is the unmarried woman version of Mistr). This was a total surprise. I had never heard the Mistrová name mentioned before. If you do a Google search with Mistrová you get about 40,300 hits. If any of the pages are in English, I haven't seen one. I presume Mistrová is a common Czech surname from the huge number of Google hits. I am totally baffled by this discovery. I wonder if you can suggest an explanation.
