We are going to Prague and I would love to know where my father’s family lived. They were Bohemian and the best I can do in unraveling the thread is to estimate his great grandfather came to the US (Chicago Area) in the middle to late 1800s. His father’s name was August Loula. He was a Chicago (Forest Glen) Policeman. If anyone can get me started, please lend a hand.

My grandfather, Stephen Francis Gajan or Gayan, was born 2 Sep 1860 in Buta, Austria-Hungary and died 20 May 1894 in Iron Mountain, MI. His parents were John Gajan or Gayan and Mary ______. On 19 Sep 1881 he married Mary Ann Frankovic, born 13 Aug 1861, Iglau, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, died 24 Nov 1951, Iron Mountain, MI. Her parents were Paul Frankovic and Susan Kopecky. Stephen did not list any brothers or sisters on his immigration papers, because he left Austria-Hungary to avoid Army conscription under orders of Emperor Franz Joseph and he was afraid of possible retribution towards his brothers and sisters and other relatives. Stephen immigrated to the U.S. in the 1880's and worked in the mines in Iron Mountain, MI to earn money for his wfe and children to follow him. In 1886/1887 Mary, (who was pregnant with Francis Stephen Gayan), Andrew Gajan, age 5, and Justine Elizabeth Gayan, age 3, immigrated to the U.S. and Francis (Frank) was born in Iron Mountain, MI 19 Jul 1887. My father Andrew Joseph Gajan was born 19 Sep 1882 in Iglau, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary. He died 11 Jul 1957 in Sacramento, CA.

Here is a puzzler. I have almost no info on my great grandfather, August Ruzicka who was from somewhere in Bohemia (supposedly Prague, but there is no proof) and moved with wife and children to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1865. Today I received the following obit: Milwaukee Sentinal January 26, 1902 August Ruzicka died of pneumonia at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. John Kinstetter, 619 21st St. He was 71 years of age, and had been a resident of Milwaukee for 37 years. He served 10 years in the Italian army before coming to this country. Mr. Ruzicka was a native of Bohemia. He leaves a widow and 7 children. Why would he have spent time in the Italian army? What politically was going on at that time? How can I use this clue to learn more? His wife was Antonia Lorberblatt (spelling varies), his father was Mateus Ruzicka, and mother was Mary Prochaska. Greetings from Fife Lake, Michigan, United States. I am searching for the family ties of my grandparents, Anna Marek who married Walter Chromie (Czechlosvakia) (Chromey) in LaPorte Indiana. I came across a US Dept of Justice Immigration and Naturalization form where my grandmother stated that she was born on August 13, 1891 in either Austria or Czechlosvakia and entered the United States in the year 1909 at New York City. I know she had a brother named John who also came to America and moved to LaPorte Indiana to raise his family. Researching the surname"Kriz" from Bystra. district of Humpolec. My great grandfather was Josef Kriz and his wife, Katerina (maiden name unknown). Great Uncles were Frank, Joe, John, Emil, Antone, and my Grandfather was Vaclav. There were two Great Aunts, Mary, and Francis. Researching: BARCAL, BLAHA, SIDLO
My grandfather, Jan Barcal, was born in May 1876 in Vodnany, Bohemia. His mother was Katerina Barcal; Jan never knew a father nor was he told who his father was. In about 1888, Jan's mother and Jan's sister, Marie, came to America. They left 11 year old Jan in Bohemia to pretty much fend for himself. Somewhere around 1902 or 1903, Jan married my grandmother, Marie Anna Sidlo, in the Catholic Church in Vodnany. In 1905 they came to America and went directly to Chicago where Jan's mother and his sister, now married to Josef Blaha, lived at 725 Throop Street. Josef and Marie Blaha had possibly 4 children: Joseph, Edward, Anne and ?. In about 1915, the Blahas moved to 5521 West 25th Pl., Cicero, IL. Katerina was still living with the Blahas. In Jan 1929 Katerina Barcal died in Cicero. Her death certificate states she was the widow of Frank Barcal. If anyone is researching the Barcal and Blaha surnames in the Chicago/Cicero area, please contact me.

I am researching James Krikava born 20 June 1836 at Horovice Praha Village Sedlec, and died 20 June 1917 in Virginia, Gage County, Nebraska. He married Antonie Zitek in Czechoslovakia who was born 11 Feb. 1840 and died 29 April 1906 in Crab Orchard, Nebraska. Together they had seven children, 6 of whom who were born in Bohema. There names are Barbara, Frank, John, Anna Albie, Rosa, Lena & Joseph. Joseph was born in the United States. I am also researching Antonin & Marie Kozler. They had seven children named Josephine, Mary, Anton, Louise, Anna and Joseph. Anna was born 10 July 1857 in Mirosov and Joseph was born 16 April 1867 in Dobriv Czech. I am also interested in the Frantisek Kozak & Matka Meri Vetrovsky family. Frantisek was born 15 Nov. 1831 and died 17 Oct. 1889 in Nebraska. Matka Meri was born 2 Feb. 1841 in Tresenice Milevsko and died 5 Feb. 1918 near Virginia, Nebraska. They had seven children named Joseph, Josephine, Marie, Frank, Jan, Barbara, & Anna. Last but not least is the Joseph Dezort & Anna Kozler family. Joesph was born 4 Sept. 1848 in Rokycany Village Dobriv Czech. and died 10 Dec. 1929 in Virginia, Nebraska. He married Anna Kozler at Prauge, Czech. Joseph & Anna had 3 children before immigrating to the United States. There names were Godlove, Vincent who died as a baby, & Frank. I am very intertested in any help you could give me to further my research in Czechoslovakia.

My father, Jaroslav Zavijacik, came to Canada in 1939. From what I can tell, he was born in Tescise, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. He may have had relatives in Hodonin. My Grandmother's name was Anerks Pindova. My Grandfather was Frontisek Zavijacic. It may be that my Grandfather was once Mayor of a small town, but I am not sure. My great grandfather Johann Pavlik was born in the Empire of Austria (possible in Slovakia) on June 22, 1836. I am working on my family history and would like to find someone with information or leads on his parents, wife, brothes and sisters and children other than Frank and Louis who emigrated with him to the United States. Johann Pavlik emigrated to the U.S. in June 1883. He emigrated from the port of Bremen in Germany on or about May 23, 1883 and arrived in the port of New York on or about June 6, 1883, according to his application for Naturalization filed in Fayette County, Texas, USA on June 29, 1887. He did not bring a wife with him to the USA. It is possible that she was deceased. He brought my grandfather Frank (Franz) Pavlik who was born August 15, 1871 and my grandfathers brother Louis (Alois) who was born September 10, 1873. Somewhere I found that he was married in the Empire of Austria on February 2, 1867. However I don't any proof of his marriage. Johann Pavlik died in Colorado County, Texas on February 15, 1894. He is buried in St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Weimar, Colorado County, Texas. My grandfather Frank Pavlik married Anna Wanjura the daughter of Josef and Johanna (Benhauser) Wanjura on January 23, 1894 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Weimar, Texas. Frank and Anna where the parents of 10 Children, Ernest, Anna, Frank Jr., Aloysia, Maria, Ida, Emelia, Carl (Charlie), Adolf (my father), and Joseph. (Aloysia, Maria, and Ida died at birth or within a few months of birth). Louis (Alois) married Anna Gebauer on October 18, 1896. Louis and Anna were the parents of 13 Children, Frank J., Martha, Annie, Pauline, Joe L., Otto, Ida Adela, John, Alma, Elsie, Herman, Alvina, and Edgar. I am trying to find out my great grandmother's maiden name and something about her parents, siblings,m etc. She was born 22 Feb. l839 in Litomysl, Bohemia or in a surrounding village, such as Porici, Benatky or Sloupnice. She married Wenceslaus Splichal in Bohemia, and from that marriage came my grandfather, Joseph Splichal, born 8Feb l86l. Wenceslaus died in Bohemia and Rosalia was a widow for several years. She then married a Vaclav Pulkrabek about 1872 while in Bohemia, and they had a son of the same name. Rosalia, Joseph, and the two Vaclav's immigratedd to America, where they settled around Silver Lake, Minnesota. According to the 1900 census, Rosalia had four children, only one living, my grandfather. I cannot account for the other two, but there is a record of a Rosalie Splichal having a girl called Marie Anna in Benatky in 1860. It was in the index for the parish of Litomysl. Can anyone help? I have recently begun tracing my heritage and have come up with many unanswered questions. I hope you can help with some of them. My tree, for now at least starts with Joseph Pribyl who married Josephine Kepka. All we know of these two are their names, however we do know that they had at least one son named Vencl Ferdinard Pribyl who was born in Austria, Bohemia area. We know that he arrived in the United States on May 28, 1874, and that his mother was to ill to come with him. He first moved to Chelsea, IA and later Wolsey, SD. He made a living from being a tailor. I would love any and all information or helpful hints as to how to go about getting information on Vencl or his parents.

I am searching for a Vaclav Fikac and Camilla or(Kamila) Ullman. They were married September 29, 1909, in St. Louis, MO. They came to the US through Galveston, TX. Both are from Bohemia. It is believed that Camilla is from Budejovice. She had a sister and I think her father's name was Francis Skala and her mother's name (I think) is Marie ? ? The surname on the Christian Letter said she was born 1882 but her death certificate said 1885. We believe Vaclav was from Velky Bor or (Vel Bor). He came to America before WWI. His birthday registered as May 31, 1884. He left Galveston, moved up towards St. Louis, MO. married there and then came to Chicago, Illinois. I have his Alien# with his thumb print on it, don't think he ever became a citizen, he died in 1946. There is "Fikac's" in Texas now, whom we think might be relatives. Anyone having any information on these two people, my husband and I would appreciate your sharing the information. It would be greatly appreciated. I have enjoyed the Czech Site, it helps me see and understand my husbands grandfather's heritage, along with some of the stories his mother has shared with me. It is a beautiful culture. Need information from the town of Sirociny, Czech Republic, previously Czechoslovakia and Bohemia, near the larger city of Tyn nad Vltvou. Matej or Michael Krucek was the son of Thomas and Catherine Krucek (he was from Zahori, she from Zverkovice, Bohemia). Matej was left behind at the age of 14 when the family immigrated to the US in Dec. 1853. Also left were younger children Vojtech (Albert), and Joseph. I believe Matej was the father of my ancestor John, who immigrated to the US in 1879 and settled in Chicago. I would like to find records to verify this. How do I get records from Sirociny, where John was born? Why would a family leave behind some children, but take others with them?
