ROMAN SITES ON THE CENTRAL DANUBE
International UNESCO Project
Central European countries, connected by the river Danube, yet
divided for 50 years by the Iron Curtain, used to present their own
culture in a separate, individual way. Archeological remains of the
Roman Empire, along the "Limes Romanus", are perhaps the most
unifying monuments interlinking Austria, Moravia, Slovakia and
Hungary in one historic epoch.
Estimated costs: 50 000 $
To present these in a concerted way
is the aim of a forthcoming publication entitled "Itinerary of
Roman Sites". Within Slovakia the publication will reference sites
such as Devin, Rusovce-Gerulata, Stupava, Dubravka, Milanovce,
Cifer-P c, Boldog, and Iza-Leanyvar. A consequent joint proposal
could be to include the entire group of Roman sites in the concerned
countries into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is expected that the publishing of "Itinerary of Roman Sites"
will also contribute to the development of cultural soft tourism.
This concept of cultural tourism encourages the use of environment
friendly transportation (bicycles, boats, walking), and is
considered to be the best, and most authentic way to rediscover
historical culture, and to arouse public interest in the cultural
and natural environment of the region.
