Our Slavic Fellow Citizens - 1910

Slovak Emigration
Chapter VI

Among our Slavic immigrants the Slovaks rank second in education, but far below, the Bohemians.

Our immigration figures for 1900 for those fourteen years of age and over show that of Bohemians, 3 per cent are illiterate; Slovaks, 28 per cent. It is worth noticing, as bearing out my view that we get the pick of the Slovak population, that this is decidedly better than the proportion at home. The Slovak counties range from Gomor, with 28 per cent of the population illiterate, to Ung, with over 67 per cent.

Twelve of the Slovak counties are worse than the general Hungarian average (50.6 per cent) of illiteracy, four are better.
