Daughter's essay honors dad - Boardman girl writes about veterans, wins national contest - by Cynthia Hoover, Vindicator staff writer

In 1968, Jim Janik lost his leg while fighting for his country in Vietnam.

Twenty-two years later, his daughter, Kathy, honored him in the Catholic War Veterans of America 1990 National Essay Contest.

"My dad, who fought in Vietnam, saw many terrible things because war is a terrible thing," Kathy said in her essay. "My dad, like other veterans, gave up more than most young people realize."

"As the daughter of a disabled veteran, I can tell you there will be no burning of the American flag in our front yard," she said.

Her views on flag burning are shared by her father. "If I ever saw a flag burning, I'd be in jail," said Janik. "I love this country and anyone who has been a veteran - man or woman - has got to have a certain sense of pride."

Kathy, 14, of 7366 Salinas Trail in Boardman, recently graduated from Saint Charles School. Her teacher, Mrs. Dee Canavan, encouraged her to enter the essay in local, state and national competitions. Saint Stanislaus Post 1922 sponsored the entry.

Years of listening to her father's Vietnam stories helped Kathy win the national competition's $100 prize and gold medal. She said writing the essay made her realize the importance of remembering the war and the young American men who risked their lives. janik said understanding and admitting mistakes also are needed for the nations progression. "I don't think it was all for nothing" he said. "The veterans did not lose the war, the politicians did."

The Janik family was affected emotionally by the Vietnam War Memorial after visiting it a few years ago.

Kathy said the thousands of listed names made her think of the many American lives ended in Vietnam. Her father, who felt alienated after returning home in 1968, said names of friends jumped out from the black stone.

"After I left the memorial, I was more at peace than I had been in all these years," he said.

Kathy said her father's stories about the war and Vietnamese and American cultural differences educated her more than classroom lessons. Janik said he never wanted to hide the war or its effect from his family.

"It's not fun putting someone in vinyl and on a plane to bring him home," he said. "I have seen enough vinyl bags to last a lifetime."
