Researching: HUMENICK, YANGULA
Andrew Humenick was born in Zborov, Slovakia in 1865. He emigrated with siblings from there to Bremen and boarded a ship to NY in 1898-99. He settled in Luzerne Co.,PA to work in the coal mines. Two years after his arrival he sent for his fiance Anna Yangula. they were married in Hazleton, PA. I would like to find out about his family in Slovakia. I have written to the archives there, and they replied with a payment schedule for the search. the prices are reasonable, but I like to have complete control of the search. Otherwise I anticipate great expense. Does anyone know how I should ask them to begin?

Researching: TURZYCA, TURZYCOVA, BINIA, BINIOVA, EUREKA
I am looking for information on the family names of Turzyca and Binia. My great-grandfathercame to the United States (West Virginia) approximately 1912. His wife and children (?) followed shortly after him. The names of those I know for sure came here are: Valentin Turzyca - my great-grandfather - born October 16, 1877 Maria Biniova - my great-grandmother - born April 12, 1877 Anna Turzycova - my great-aunt - born July 27, 1907. I think another great-aunt may have come with them - Eva Turzycova. She would have been older than Anna. My great-grandparents married on May 20, 1902. My great-grandmother was pregnant with my grandfather, Valentine Eureka, when she came here. He was born May 03, 1912 either on the ship or shortly after the family arrived. The family name was changed to Eureka when they came. I really do not have much other information on them except the birth certificate for Anna that is written in Czech and names of children born in the U.S., as well as the following generations.

Researching: BARNICKEL
I am living in Portland, Oregon, USA. I was raised in Western Pennsylvania, USA. That region holds many families of Slovakian origin, most of which were immigrants back at the beginning of the century. Most took up working in the steel mills and coal mining back then. I do know that my great-grandmother and great-grandfather were directly from Slovakia/Czchoslovakia, whatever it was at that time, but know little because they died before I could learn anything, and it seems that none of my family cared to pass on the history, how sad! Anyway, my last name is Barnickel, and I'm not sure if it was changed when they came over, probably was though. Just wondering if you have any info on this name or any liklinesses.

Researching: BESKOROWANY, DEMCHUK, PENDZIWOL
Searching for the birthplace of Stefan Beskorowany who married Sofia Demchuk in Galicia. They came to Canada in 1902 and settled about 90 miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They came with 4 children - Michael, Nickola, Demko (Dan), and Marya. Sofias sister, Nastia, married Nikola Pendziwol, and they too, with their family, came with them to Canada. We think they may have come from Kopychentsi, Galicia (at that time) since many other people in the settlement they went to came from that area, but we have no proof. On the passenger list it shows only that they were from Galicia, and no town or city is mentioned. We have been told that Bezkorowany means "without wedding bread" and that it is a Cossack name. Apparently serfs often ran away from the lords of the manors and took refuge with the Cossacks. The Cossacks insisted that these people be baptized to the Cossacks, and gave them new names so they could not be traced. Noone in the family ever mentioned anything about Cossacks, but the Cossacks came into dominance around 1400, fighting the Tatars and Turks. They sometimes fought for the government, and sometimes against it. The Russian government at last persuaded them to settle down - either to be farmers or border guards. These people were mostly Polish and Ukrainian, some Lithuanian. So if they went back to being farmers and were still "Ukrainian", after several generations the Cossack association would become clouded. Also, when these people came to Canada or the USA they did not talk much of their past, because they were afraid of the penalties of association. They were not used to freedom. Anyone hear of Bezkorowany??

My is Jozef Ridos and I came to Canada in 1951 from Starcinska-Roztoka. I left this village in 1950 at age 18 yrs and fled the communists regime by-way of the Czech-West German border. I remained in a refugee camp in Nuremberg for the next 15 months. I made application to Australia and Canada and was excepted by the Canadian Government in April of 1951. I arrived in the port of Halifax and then made my way up to northern Ontario and worked as a lumber-jack. After appoximately five months I made my way down to Southern Ontario and heard that Hamilton had a fairly large Slovak population. I moved to Hamilton and joined St.Cyrils and Methodius Roman Catholic Church and the Canadian Slovak League. In May of 1953 I married Mary Matey who is also of Slovak heritage. He and his son, Michael, settled in a place called Buffalo Hill, Pennsylvania. It no longer exists. Canonsburg, PA would probably be its closest town. Big Mike, as my great grandfather was known, came to America without his wife, who told him she'd join him once they were settled. When he finally sent for her, she declined the invitation to join him. Seeing as how my grandfather was 18, Big Mike up and left, never to be heard from again. Or at least that's how the legend goes. Researching: SKOP, SCHKOP
The name I seek information about is Skop. I understand a family member once lived in Philadelphia, PA, USA and spelled the name "Schkop" The name is Slovak. I understand the Schkop is a germanic spelling of the name. My family migrated from Slovakia to America. I speculate that since my grandfather was a miner in Pennsylvania that it is possible he was from a mining background in Slovakia. As I understand, there are mining areas in the Tatra Mountains.

Researching: BILPUCH, BILUCH, BILKO
I am doing some research into my mom's side of my family who descended from
Porac. My grandfather was born in the states in 1903, but returned to Porac for 1910 - 1924, and then came back to the states where he settled down in western PA and started his family. I'd like a copy of his father's birth certificate if it can be found. My grandfather's name was John Bilko, but the original family name is Bilpuch. My grandfather's father's name was George Bilpuch, and I have documents that indicate that he was born in 1861. I'm not 100% sure that he was born in Porac though. I saw on your web pages that there is a name "Biluch" from the church register. My grandfather's name is consistently spelled "Bilpuch" on the documents that we have, but I wonder if the other spelling is prevalent (Yes, you will find variations including Bilpuch).
