Researching: CZURAS
Many of the Czuras of the United States and Canada are interested in information about the Czura name, its origination and genealogy. There are about seven families centered in New York/New Jersey, Chicago, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, and Ontario. Michael Czura, my grandfather, fled the chaos of World War I in the early 1900s. He entered the United States in New York. From there he travel to Chicago, where he lived the rest of his life. He spoke of coming from "White", as opposed to "Red", Russia. He never spoke about his family "roots". Please forward information to me for consolidation. Thanks. I think that I am the only Thomas Czura in the World.

Researching: HAYER, ZONA
I'm trying to research my mother's family. Both of her parents, Julia Hayer and Stephan Zona, were from somewhere in Czechoslovakia. I was told that part of Czechoslovakia where my grandmother grew up was annexed to Hungary. This would have happened after 1920. Although my grandmother is still living, she is not one to be very forthcoming with info. She's always been a very present-living individual. Besides, now she is not terribly lucid. When I asked her the name of her town, where she grew up, she only named the Pennsylvania town to where she immigrated. My grandfather died in 1943. They both came to the Wilkes-Barre, PA area, about 1920. Neither surname sounds much like a Slovak name to me. Perhaps the "y" in Hayer should be a "j" and Zona may have been completely changed for all I know. Any help would be appreciated.

Researching: GORDAN, IVANCSAK, KASKO, HRICO
I am doing research on my ancestors and would appreciate any information on the surnames Gordan or Ivancsak (from the areas around or near Velka Domasa or Kelca) and Kasko or Hrico (from the areas near Trebisov), Eastern Slovakia. All of my grandparents arrived in the Trenton, NJ area before 1915. All were born between 1892 and 1893. My grandfather, Michael Gordan, had two brothers, John and Imrich and possibly a sister Mary. His wife was Mary Ivancsak. My grandfather, John Kasko, had at least one brother, Stefan, while his wife, Anna Hrico (or Hricova) had at least one brother, Andrew. The place, Velka Domasa, may no longer exist. Family legend has it lying under a lake, in a valley, as the result of a Dam being constructed "downriver somewhere". Although my information is scarce and all of my immediate sources have passed away, these were supposedly large families so I'm hoping someone can make a connection.

Researching: BANKO, BANKA, BANKOOVA, BANKOSE, BANKOVA, BANKOVICH, BANKOVICHOV, BENKO, DZUGAN, KORBA
I am researching the surnames Banko (could also be Banka, Bankoova, Bankos, Bankova, Bankovich, Bankovichov, or this same array starting with Benko); Dzugan; and Korba. My granparents were John P. Banko, and Anna D. Dzugan. They had a number of children: Julia, John, Mary, Michael, Julia Patricia (my mother), Helen, Ann, and Margaret. I know very little about John P. Banko. He was born in 1875, immigrated to the USA (Berwick, PA) in about 1892, became a naturalized citizen in Lackawanna County, PA in 1897 and died in Minneapolis in 1940. Anna D. Dzugan (my grandmother) was born in 1878 in the town of Habura, next to the Polish border and near the town of Medzilaborce in the county of Zemplin (now Humenne). Her parents were Wallace Dzugan and Julia Korba of Habura. They had several children: Wallace, Stephen, Mary Dzugan-Timko, Anna (my grandmother), and two other sons. Anna immigrated to the USA (Berwick, PA) in about 1892. She and John Banko actually met for the first time in the USA and were married in 1900. I would appreciate any information you have concerning the siblings and ancestors of John Banko and Anna Dzugan. Thanks.

My father's family immigrated from Iglo (Spisska Nova Ves) and Levoca, Czech (approx. 48 lattitude, 16 longitude) and also Nomavets, Austria. I do not yet have a handle on that location. One great grandfather, John (Gorrilla, Garela, Cairilla) was born in 1850 and came to the US in 1881. He was wed to Susan Mrovchak. His friend, another grandfather, Michael Krainak (spelling uncertain), was born in 1876. He was wed to Mary Beller, born in 1879. The surnames Servia and Schmidt may also be in the Beller lineage. Many of my relatives worked in the mines in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan. They lived and gave birth to children in: Ironwood, Quinnesec, Mercer and Marquette. I have information also on other families related by marriage. I would be interested in exchanging information with anyone about my relatives or passing along what I may know about this area. I have documentation of my relatives counted in the 1900 census and I would also like to find out any earlier information, such as did they live somewhere other than No. Wisc. & Mich. after landing in the US. I have a relative that died in a mining accident and would like to gain access to any public records of employee rolls for mining companies there. I would also be interested in any property records, baptism, birth, death or marriage records for these US or foreign areas.

Researching: VYROBIK, VIROBIK
My father, Andreas (Andrew) Vyrobik, was born in Olesna, Czechoslovakia on July 16, 1900, but was "farmed out" at the age of 10 years old, and lived with a family in Feldbach, Austria. He lived in Austria until 1928, at which time he came to America to join his brothers John and George Virobik (note the change in spelling which was effected in the U.S.), and never returned to Europe, even for a visit. My father passed away in 1966, and I recently found (after my mother passed away) a Christmas card from an Andrew Vyrobik, dated Bratislava, 1950 , with a return address of "Bratislava, Sajova 7". I believe the word is "Sajova". The address was written in cursive, and the Bratislavan Andrew could write in English. The card was addressed to my father in Centralia, IL. The only other relative I am aware of (other than Uncles John and George). was a cousin with the surname of Holka, who lived in Pennsylvania in the 60's. Unfortunately, no contact was maintained with this relative. I am most interested in learning of any possible family remaining in the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Austria or points elsewhere. Thank you for this opportunity!

Researching: ROSKOS, POLIECK, GDOVIN, MURMAN, HAMARA, DUDA, PREBULA, KUCHARIK
I am trying to find information on my great grandparents that were born in Slovakia before eventually coming to the United States. Joseph Roskos was born 14 March 1864 in Zelmanovce, Slovakia. When he came to the United States in 1880-81, we were told that he changed his name to Roskos from Polieck (not sure if it is spelled correctly) That name was taken from an obituary from his brother-in-law which gave my great grandfather's sisters maiden name of Mary Polieck. Mary was born 2 February 1858, and married George Kucharik. which showed on the obituary being from Bulslovania and was born 1 November 1851. They immigrated to the United States in 1874. We were also told that my great grandfather use to send money and clothing to his brother or an uncle that lived in Slovakia. They did that up to the time of World War II. He wrote to them and told them not to send any more because the money and clothing were being stolen. They corresponded for many years and then the letters stopped coming. My great grandmother Roskos was born 18 December 1870 in Zeleznik, Slovakia. She married my great grandfather 1 April 1892 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. On her death certificate her name was listed as Anna Hamara, and on the marriage certificate it stated the name Anna Duda. She came to the United States in 1891 and lived in a small town called Calhan, Colorado where she and my great grandfather lived. I am also searching for my great grandfather Andrej Gdovin born 26 November 1860, in Lascov, Slovakia. We were told that he dropped the "G" from his name when he moved to Calhan, Colorado where there was another family with the same last name. We know that his father's name was also Andrej Gdovin, and his mothers maiden name was Anna Drabikova. My great grandmother Dovin was born January 1863 in Koprivnica, Slovakia. Her maiden name was Anna Murman, and her fathers name was Michel Murman and her mother's maiden name was Euranna Perbola. My great grandparents were married 25 September, 1882 in Koprivnica in the Roman Catholic Church. In Republica Cechoslovaca (provincia: Slovenska districtus: giraltovskz) et in dioecesi: kosickam.......existentis haec in tomo...IV. pag. 2 contineri: That was taken directly from the marriage certificate. If you can give me any information to help me find a link to my great grandparents and their families, I would appreciate it so very much. Researching: ONTKO, ONDKO
I am currently working with 2 families with connections to Porac. I am doing Ontko genealogy and am currently constructing all Ontko family trees and establishing their connections to Slovakia. The names appear in the Porac records as Ondko as they seem to do in Greek Catholic records. I see a few familiar names in your database but will have to take a closer look at them. I enjoyed your information and pictures. I would be interested any input you might have on the Ondko names if you have anything. The families in question came to Cleveland, OH and Youngstown, OH areas and most likely are cousins as far as I can see. Two Andrews born the same year and married three times each with the third marriage on the same day. I am finding the Porac records to be less informative than other records I have looked at. Also may eventually end up with some ties to Koterbachy. Name sounds familiar. Well, I'll close and look forward to further information on your page about Porac.

Researching: MIKOLAJ, MIKOLAY
I am trying to find out information about my great-grand father. All that I know is what I have read on his petition for naturalization to the United States of America in 1901. His name was Stephen Mikolaj which he changed to Stephen Mikolay when he came to the United States. He was born in Sepeskortvelyas, Hungary and came to the United States on the vessel "Dresden" from Breunen, Germany. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking to take a pilgrimage to his birthplace of Sepeskortvelyas and would appreciate any information on that as well.

Researching: SIMULIK, DUBCAK, KARISNY
My grandparents came to Canada around 1920 from Orava in Slovakia. My grandfather, Jan, was born in Krusetnica, and my grandmother, Sofia (maiden name Karisny) was born in Podbiel. An additional feature of my grandfather's name is that is was hyphenated as "Dubcak-Simulik". When my grandfather arrived in Canada, he used only the "Simulik" portion of the name. All my remaining relatives in Slovakia use the "Dubcak" portion. My relatives are in Bratislava, Petrzalka, Dunajska Streda, Podbiel, Krusetnica, Namestovo, and Ilava. I would be interested in meeting anyone with the same last name. Please contact me, Tony Simulik, in Ottawa, Ontario (in English alebo po-slovensky).

Researching: GRAUER, TAKOBOVITS, KIRSCH, FRIED
My grandmother, born in May, 1867, was from Humenne. She arrived in the United States in 1888. Her parents' names, as noted and spelled on her 1890 New York City marriage license, were Morris Grauer and Sara "Takobovits." It is not known whether "Takobovits" is an accurate spelling or a phonetic approximation of the actual family name. Her husband, my grandfather, Abraham (aka Adolph) Kirsch also arrived in 1888. On the same marriage license material, he lists his home as "Tsirakow," (then in Austria), which, I believe, may well be Siracov, located 95 miles East of Bratislava. His parents' names are noted as Manes Kirsch and Lena Fried. Dora and Abraham had five children: Lottie, Bernard, Henry, Pauline and Julia. From 1902 to 1911, Pauline and Julia were in the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum. In 1900, Dora, Abraham and their five children were living in Queens, N. Y. By 1911, Dora was living on Ellary Street in Brooklyn. It is believed that Abraham may have died in the early 1900s. Abraham probably had a brother, Benjamin Kirsch, who also arrived in 1888. Benjamin and his wife Esther resided in New York in the early 1900s and had nine children: Pauline, Julius, Abraham L., Joseph, Kate, Sidney, Gerold, Nettie and Leonard. Anyone potentially having information regarding any of the above, please contact me.

Researching: DIMUN, SEPTAK, RUSSIN, ZIDEK
I am researching the surname of Dimun. My grandfather, Michael Dimun, arrived in the U.S. through the port of New York on March 1 or 3, 1906. He was born in Habura, a village in the county of Zemplen, Slovakia (Possibly known as Austria at that time). His mother's name was Mary Septak and I believe his father's name was Demetri. I am interested in learning more about them and any other Dimun's that may be related. I am also interested in learning if there are any Dimun's still living today in Habura or anywhere in Slovakia. I am also researching the surname of Russin. My grandmother, Julia Russin Dimun, was born in 1899 in the village of Sambron in the county of Saros in Slovakia. Her parents were from the same village and were Nicolai Russin and Anna Zidek. She may have arrived in the U.S. around 1912 and settled in Lyndora, Pa. She married Michael Dimun, who was from Habura in the county of Zemplen, Slovakia. I am interested in any information concerning the Russins or the Zideks.
