Researching: BUTCHKO
Hej Slovaci, my biggest problem is searching for the town my grandfather and dad, came from. The only thing I can remember my dad telling me it was on the border of Austria or Hungary. They came from Slovakia, around the year 1906, or 1907. My dad was 6 yrs. old when he got here, and was born in 1901 or 02. They came into New York City, and they settled in Nanticoke, Pa. They were coal miners, dad going into the mines when he was 9 yrs. old. He had three brothers and two sisters. They were all born in the USA. That's all I can remember being told. I just sent for the book Slovak Pride, and hope I can find some clues in there. Thank you.

Researching: SEBOK, KAPITANY
Hi, I'm really, really new to this and need all the help I can get. Have joined one other Hungarian mailing list via rootsweb.com and in reading those messages saw your website and thought I'd give it a try. I'm not even sure what to expect so if anyone, anywhere has information or a tie to my great-grandfather, Joseph Sebok, married to Mary ?. I do know that they were Catholic but that's really all the info I have on them! I'm guessing that they could have been born in or around 1867. They had two sons: Joseph (eldest) and Paul (my grandfather) b. 1887 probably in or near Karcag, Hungary. Paul m. Julia Kapitany (they had a son, Paul, my dad, b. Feb1, 1911 in Karcag.) The three of them immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1912, arriving in Montreal and immediately travelling on to Kipling, SK in August of 1912. They made their home right in the town of Kipling, my grandfather worked for the CNR and they had 3 more children. My dad, Paul died 5 years ago and I could kick myself for not quizzing him more on his roots! His two sisters are living but seem to know very little re: the Sebok side, probably because that side of the family stayed in Hungary. I have found someone else "hunting" for Seboks but so far I don't think there's a connection - the birth dates are too far off. If there's anyone out there that would like to take on a novice, please feel free to write.

My husband's family came to the United States in 1848-9, from the town of Illava in northern Hungary at that time. The surname was Pavany or similar spelling. En route, Charles decided to "anglicize" his last name, and changed it to "Morningstar." We only know that it was the name of a newspaper he was reading, or the name of the ship he came over on. She was married to Georgius Hropcjan (Rabezan). They changed the name to Petrick at some point, probably about 1911 or 1912. There also was different spellings to that name, Petryk, Petrik and Patrick. They moved to Virginia in 1912 and had 8 children. George died in 1917 and is buried in Pennsylvania. Susan then married a man named Paytas (Paytosh). They lived in Cleveland and had a daughter. I am told Susan had siblings that came to America although I am unable to find connections. Please help!
