Researching: NOSAL, REZANINA, ROUBAL
I am living in Switzerland. My father, Dusan Nosal,
emigrated in 1968. I would like to know from where in The Czech Republic, Moravia or
Slovakia the name comes from, or if it is originally from Poland? What does the name
mean? Is there any heraldic figure? I would also like to contact other Nosals.
Also, names on my mother’s side of the family are Rezanina and Roubal. Does anyone
know of these names? I would like to know where they come from. I think my maternal
Grandparents and their relatives (Rezanina) lived in Horne Dujanovice in Moravia.
Please contact me with any information.

Researching: FRIED, SCHENK
I am setting up a family tree, starting with my Great Grandparents. My mother’s paternal
Grandfather was called Fried and came from Zliechov. He must have been born about
1835. I do not know more than that. I’d like to find out his first name and his wife’s
name. His children were called Herman (Armin), Sigmund and Ethel. I believe there was
another son. He remarried late in life. Again, I have no information. Are their any
records kept in Zliechov?
Also, I had relatives in Bratislava called Schenk (Moco and Sandor), who were sons of
Ethel Schenk. I would like to contact them or their descendants.

Researching: SIMKO, SHIMKO, PALICHKA
My mother went by the name Helen Shimko, but her baptismal record lists
her name as Simko. The cemetery record at Sts Peter and Paul Church in
Duquesne, Pa list her parent's names as Simko also. Apparently her father
changed his name to Shimko after he came to the US.
I have a prayer card that belonged to my mother in memory of the death of
her father Nicholas Shimko on February 21, 1936. I obtained copies of the
1910 census for Duquesne which show Nicholas and Anna Shimko residing at
number 16 Cochran St with the following children: Mary, age 2-1/2, and Anna,
age 2-1/2. My mother was born later in 1911. These names agree with the
cemetery record of Sts Peter and Paul Church. Nicholas and his wife's place
of birth is listed as "Hung slovak". They also had four boarders living
with them. Nicholas could speak English and his wife spoke only Slavish.
The cemetery record also listed three other names besides those mentioned
above, apparently children of Nicholas and Anna: Stephan, Anna, and John.
According to the census, Nicholas was 30 years old and his wife was 24
years old. That would set his birth date as 1880 and hers at 1886. Therefore
he was 56 years old at the time of his death. My mother states on one of her
military records that her mother died in 1918, which would make her 32 years
old at the time she died. The census also shows that Nicholas came to the
US in 1901 and his wife in 1905.
Nicholas married Anna Palichka in St Nicholas Church in Duquesne.
According to the 1910 census, Nicholas and Anna had been married for 3
years, which would set their marriage date as 1907. I have a copy of the
1920 census for Duquesne which lists Peter Palichka, wife Mary, and sons
John and Steve living at 10 Cochran Ave. I believe that Peter was Anna
Palichka's brother and have a photo labeled with names of the two families
posing together after Anna had died. According to the census Peter
immigrated to the US in 1907 and was 29 years old. His wife was 23, John was
7, and Steve was 3 years old.
I have a letter from my aunt to my mother which says that Nicholas came
from Zemplinska, Austria Hungary, formerly the village of Bukovce.

I don't have a lot of info on the Demko name, only that it's my dad's
mother's maiden name. His father, John Hromanik (d.1960)was born in
America, while my dad (John R.,d.12/27/97) was born in Lastomir on May
27,1922. My mother was born here, but her parents Nicholas Hraychuck
(d.1967) and Anna Sokoloski (d.1975) were from the part of the Ukraine
where it adjoins with Slovakia. My mother calls it "Gallitzia". My dad
did some research into the origins of the Hromanik name and came up with
the Hroma River in western Russia. He said that "nik" means "from" in
Russian. On Christmas Day, Dad told me and my son Joe that he wanted to
"go home". I knew what he meant, but I told him that he was home, in the
home that he'd built, with his family. He responded with "I am NOT
home!" "Where is home?", I asked. "Lastomir",was his reply. Two days
later, he returned home, to that "Great Link" with our ancestors. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.

Tomas was married once before and had two daughters from his first
marriage; Veronica and Mary. Tomas married Katerina, who was from
Vysoko, and had two daughters with her. The daughters were born in the
United States; Anna and Catherine. The Trebulaks lived in Manhattan,
lower east side.

Researching: CUKR, BURANT, BASTYR, KADERBEK,
MANDELIK, HORAK, BROM, URBAN
We are researching the Burant family tree. We think Edward D. Burant came
to the US abt 1872. He married Mary Bastyr and they had four children,
Henry, Marry, Edward and Otto. Otto married Bessie Brom and they had
two sons, Raymond Edward and Robert Otto. Robert is my father. On my
mother's side, James Cukr and Frank Horak came to the US approximately
the same time and married Bertha Urban and Anastasia Mandelik,
respectively. My ancestors on both sides were from the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. Upon arriving in the US, they all lived in the Cleveland, Ohio
area. The only discrepancy I have found so far is that Otto once told a
neice that the real family name had been Kaderbeck, and it was changed to
Burant. Burant was a derivation of a river in the home country. We
are looking for information on all of the names above.

Researching: KOVALYCSIK, KOVALCIK, KOVALSCIK, VANSCO,
BISS, KUNDRAT, KRAVCHAK, STEGNA, BELEJ, WIROSTKO, MISKIV, REPKO, SZURGENT
Researching any/all information in regard to the
Kovalycsik / Kovalcik / Kovalscik families including Vansco, Biss, Kundrat,
Kravchak, Stegena. Actual spelling of the name is Kovalcik and heritage
is Carpatho-Rusyn (Ruthenian). Name was changed due to Hungarian
spelling when immigration paperword was issued. All above except
Stegena surname came from Ujak, Saros, Eastern Slovakia (now renamed
Udol) and immigrated to Passaic, NJ 1880 to 1910. Stegena surname
originated from Orlov, Saros. Family were Greek Rite Catholic but upon
immigration some entered Orthodox parishes. Main line Father Michael
Kovalycsik, Mother, Anna Belej, had five children, John, Michael, Peter,
Anna and my Greatgrandfather, Andrew who married Anna Vansco and their
children were: John, Stefan, Anna, Mary, Michael (my grandfather) and
Nicholas. Father Andrew died on route to United States in 1909. All
settled on Fourth Street in Passaic, New Jersey and attended St.
Michaels Greek Rite Catholic Church but then moved circa 1916 to
Garfield, NJ. Stefan left New Jersey circa 1916 and relocated to
Pittsburgh, PA. Am still searching for decendents of his first marriage
to Helena a.k.a. Julia Kravchak, children who were Mary (who married
William Wirostko) and John Kovalycsik (who married Mary Miskiv). Trying
to also locate children and decendents of John Kovalycsik born 1885,
died 1925, wife was Anna Repko childrens names were Helen, Anna and
Stefan. Any information on villages of Ujak (Udol) and Orlov in Eastern
Slovakia would be appreciated. Family members of this surname still
reside in Udol which I visited in 1996. The Kovalycsik family was very
large in Passaic, New Jersey. Half Brothers and Sisters of my great
grandfather (Michael Kovalycsiks second wifes name was Suzanna Szurgent)
were Mary, Anna, Joseph and Nicholas (four others died in infancy in
Ujak). Any information on this line, these villages or anyone who knew
the Kovalycsik families would be greatly appreciated. I can be
contacted via email anytime and would be happy to share any information
with a family member who can prove lineage to my lines.

Peknik (c) mothers parents were Paul Fako and Christine Tomsik (maiden

Researching: KOLLAR, KOHLER, TROJAN, KENDRICK, HENDRICK
I am attempting to locate living relatives of my grandfather, George (Juraj?)
Kollar, who, according to my sources was born in Velky Folkmar on March 18,
1870. He had two brothers, John (Jan?) and Joseph (Joszef?) and a sister,
Mary Kollar Kendrick or Hendrick. I am told that his family owned a farm in
the vicinity of Velky Folkmar, circa 1880-1890 and that George had been a
shepherd. George left Velky Folkmar around 1890-91 due to pressures from the
Magyarization efforts of the time and to avoid being drafted into the Austro-
Hungarian army for three years.
He originally landed in Canada, but ultimately settled in Soldier,
Pennsylvania (USA) after living for a while in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
There he met and married Mary Trojan (Carpatho-Rus') who had emigrated from
the neighboring village of Helcmanovce. He worked as a coal miner during his
stay in Pennsylvania in the towns of Helvetia and Big Soldier (Soldier). He
later moved to Cleveland, Ohio (USA). He was of the Roman Catholic religion.
The Canada connection is very weak, although I have an uncle who said we had
relatives in Alberta.
To my knowledge no other members of his family emigrated to the USA and I am
hoping there may be some cousins in Velky Folkmar or nearby.
Please tell me what you know of the Kollars of Velky Folkmar. Are they
Slovaks? Could they be related to Germans of Spis~ County who arrived in
11-12 centuries? I do not know when the spelling of our name got changed,
perhaps in the Pennsylvania Dutch days it got "deutschified."
Velky Folkmar, earlier known as Gross Volkmar, a village in Spis~ near
Gelnica (or Goellnitz) which was settled by Bavarian craftsman and artisans in
12th century. Goellnitz was one of 24 German guild towns established in Spis~
at that time. Spis~, with its high German population, had the highest rate of
emigration from Slovakia of any other Austro-Hungarian County in the late
19th-early 20th century. After he had moved to Cleveland we lived in the
Hungarian "Buckeye" area, and I went to elementary school at St. Margaret's
(Roman Catholic) there. St. Margaret's was so Hungarian that the sermons were
in Hungarian. The pastor was a Monsignor Kollar.(?) But my grandfather had at
some point permitted his name to be changed to Kohler and was thus naturalized
in Jefferson County, PA on October 1, 1896. We always attended church at Our
Lady of Peace, in nearby Shaker Hts., where the sermons were in English.

Researching: WASKO, WASHKO, VASKO, PATRUSKA, PARSLEY
Seeking info on ggrandmother Anna who was separated from her brother
Frank in Passaic, NJ after living there for a few years with an aunt
name unknown. Anna settled in SD after marrying a Michael
Petruska/Parsley. Anna lived to be 93 but was never sure of the correct
spelling of her last name. She is believed to have come from a place
named Korema, Austro-Hungary. Any help or corrections would be
appreciated. She also worked in a match factory in Passaic at age 8.
Anna was born about 1875. I don't know if brother Frank was older or
younger. That would have put her in Passaic around 1883.

Researching: OLES, KURAN, PATEK, DULKOVA, HRKEL,
SALKA, FUKAS, STOBER
Seeking information on the Oles surname. My paternal grandmother, Maria
Oles Kuran, came to the US in 1905 from Cimhova, the Slovak Republic, with
her sister Veronika. Veronika married Martin Patek and they returned to
Cimhova/Liesek where they had a son Martin who was killed in a timbering
accident in Liesek in the 1940's and whose daughter Maria Dulkova lives in
Liesek today.
A brother Matej (born 03/24/1894) remained in the Slovak Republic and
during the war (1914-1918) was captured by the Russian army. In 1923 he
went to Canada where he worked in the forests for about 10 years before
returning to Cimhova where he lived until his death on 08/17/1975. He had
a son Stefan (born 07/30/1921) who passed away on 08/18/1995. Stefan and
his wife Veronika had three children, Vlado, Jan and Stefan.
Another Oles sister, Anna, also remained in Cimhova, marrying a man whose
last name was Hrkel. They had two sons, Jozef and Jan who are in their
80's and I think still live in Liesek.
The fourth Oles sister, Rozalia, remained in the Slovak Republic where she
married Jozed Salka. They had three children: Ludovit, now in California,
and Irena Fukas and Margita Stober, both in the Slovak Republic.
My grandparents, Michael Kuran and Maria Oles Kuran, had eight children and
remained in Fayette and Greene Counties, PA till their deaths in 1947 and
1955, respectively. My father, Michael Jonas Kuran (born 11/07/1909, die
07/08/1990) was their first child. Are any of these people in your family
tree.
