I am looking for anyone with any information regarding the surnames Krak or Skarupa. To the best of my knowledge, the Kraks originated in Nova Bella, Slavonia. Both familes eventually settled in Northeast NJ, and Yonkers, NY. Thanks a lot!

Researching: SKANDER, SKENDER, SHANDER, SEDLARICH, SLEYZAK, VOJTEK, VOJTUS, HRIC
Looking for home town of my Grandfather, Joseph Nickolas Skander/Skender. Parents were Matthew Skander/Skender and Barbara "Katie" Sedlarich. Joseph immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1911(03). The 1910 Census shows a Joseph Skandor in Fayette Co. PA, who was born in Austria/Croatian. The 1920 Census shows a Joseph Shander in Allegheny Co., PA, who was born in Hungary and spoke Magyar. On his application for a Social Security Number in 1936, he gave his birth place as Selo Silva, Yugoslavia. My Grandfather always said he was Croatian. There is a Sedlarica located near the Croatian/ Hungarian boarder which could be my Great Grandmother, Barbara Sedlarich's home town. This hasn't been proven, just an observation. There is a Silvas located in Slovakia, but it's not near the Hungarian border. There are present day Skenders living in Bjelovar, Croatia, not far from Sedlarica. I was also told that Croatians who spoke Magyar were from the Hungarian boarder area. I have ordered films from the LDS for both locations in Slovakia and Croatia for the time period I am looking for, but any help and further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am also searching for the home towns of my Great Grandparents, Michael Sleyzak and Anna Vojtek (Vojtus). Michael, was b. 1857, in Slovakia, and d. 1930, in PA. Anna was b. 1860 in Slovakia, and d. 1929 in PA. They married 1885 in Austria. Michael immigrated in 1890 and Anna immigrated in 1893(5) with son, Joseph. Michael worked the coal mines in Luzerne and Fayette Counties, PA. The remainder of children were born here. Michael's parents were Michael Sleyzak and Mary Hric. Anna's parents were John and Mary (?) Vojtek (Vojtus). Would appreciate any and all suggestions and help. Thanks.

Researching: GYURICZA, VALACH, WALACH, VALLACH, FONODY, HOLY, HOLLY
Please send me some more information about my grand-grandfather's family tree. What I know is the following: Janos Gyuricza, born in Vinica (Also-Ipolynyek) 27.okt.1865, died in Budapest 14.jan.1929 His parents were Janos Gyuricza and Magdolna Karolina Valach (or Walach, or Vallach), married in Hrusov 11.jan.1863 and who had six (?) children: Karoly, Janos, Kalman, Peter, Katalin, Matild (maybe more?) We found two marriage certificates with the same date (11.1.1863): one in Hrusov, which says that Janos was 31 years old and born in Pukanec (Bakabanya) and his wife Magdolna (born in Hrusov) was 18. The other one is from Vinica and says Janos was 29! (born in Hrusov) and his wife Magdolna (born in Felsonyek, probably the upper part of Vinica) was 22! The first one looks more close to reality, because we presume Magdolna was born in Hrusov on 24.okt.1844 and her parents were Istvan Valach and Rezi (Terezia) Fonody. We also know Janos's parents were called Janos Gyuricza and Erzsebet Holy (or Holly) but we don't know where they were born. Any other information on the Gyuricza's would be welcome! Thank you very much!

In my original listing, somehow I must have failed to put in the name of Rebyak which is my maiden name. Wood is my married name and not the research name. The different spellings I have had for my grandfathers name are Rebjak, Rebiak, Rabiak. On the Baptism certificate it is spelled with a different spelling than the one I grew up with. Also on their marriage license it is different. The name of the village of Baptism is the same as on the original listing, Vysna Rybnica in the year of 1875. In spite of my error, I have had some replies which have helped. Also would appreciate any more information if this helps others searchers with more information. Thank You.

Researching: VANGOR, KLINKA, RACHEL, DUBAK
I am looking for information about families surnamed Vangor, Klinka, Rachel and Dubak. My only clue is that the Klinka relatives emigrated from a village called Porubka, probably around 1900-1915. I was told that a great-uncle, Rudolf Klinka, was a freedom fighter during WWII, and that my great-aunt Minnie Dubak, his half-sister, born around 1918, attended school in that area during the 1930's. Rudolf and Minnie's mother was Rose Rachel, who had two husbands, a Mr. Klinka first, then Mr. Dubak. Aunt Minnie told me that her half-brother, Rudolf, was not allowed to enter the United States when the family came over because of some eye problem, and was sent back to the old country. When the family tried to send for him later he refused to come, she said. I know that Aunt Minnie was corresponding with some Slovak relatives up to about 1995, before she became ill (she died last year). Another sister was named Goldie Klinka, and a brother was Joe Dubak. These are all relatives of my grandmother, Julia Klinka Vangor. On my father's side, the Vangors were also Slovak, but I don't know where they came from. The Klinka- Dubaks ended up in Bridgeport, Connecticut and met the Vangors there as far as I know. Julia Klinka married Andrew Vangor around 1920. One of the old pictures in my Dad's photo album shows someone dressed as a Hussar but we have no idea who he was. Now that Aunt Minnie is gone, I would like to trace the family in Slovakia in her memory. I treasure the beautifully embroidered linen blouses she sent me before her illness. Thanks for your help.

Researching: NOVAK, ZIMDULKA
Am looking for information on husband's maternal grandparents and their family in Europe. I have the birth certificate of Emma Jane Novak (his mother), which lists her father as James Novak, b. Bohemia. His age at time of Emma's birth was 27 years, which would make his birth date abt. 1880. Emma's mother's maiden name is listed as Emma Zimdulka, b. Bohemia. Her age at time of young Emma's birth was 29, which makes her birth year abt. 1888. Family story has it that they came to America by ship through Ellis Island. He worked his way over and hid Emma in a lifeboat. They were discovered and he was punished and she was detained at Ellis Island until they could find a sponsor for her. He studied as an apprentice shoemaker in the Bohemian colony of NY and they married while in NY. From there they moved to Chicago, then Minnesota, finally settling in Iowa, where he owned a shoe store in Gilman until the time of his death in 1961. I believe Emma died bet. 1920-1930. James supposedly had a sister still in Bohemia that he wrote to. I have just started this research and have little to go on. Any help would be appreciated.

He was married to Mary Stary, born 11 February, 1887 in Nove Miestro, Czechoslovakia. She died 3 June, 1961.
