Researching: CERVENCIK, LEBEDA
My Grandfather, Martin Cervencik, was born in Slovakia in 1884 (?) and emigrated to the U.S. in 1904. Lived in the New Jersey/New York area. Married Katherine Lebeda around 1909. She was from Ustie, near the Polish border. He died in an accident in New York City in 1929. Believe he emigrated with a brother, Michael. I have found a Cervencik family in Dhle Pole, Slovakia, but haven't been able to establish a clear relationship between us. A Ferdinand Cervencik skied for Gruppe Gabcik in 1997 and I assume he is from that area, but don't know if the families are related. It's not a common name ... Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Researching: NEVELUS, NEVELICH, NEVELUSKA
My husband is of Slovak descent. His last name is Nevelus (which has been shortened from either Nevelich or Neveluska-or some similar spelling). The family settled in the Bridgeport,Connecticut area. I would like to know if anyone has information on this family, such as place of origin in Slovakia. I know there was an Antonio and a Mathias Nevelus in Connecticut as early as 1903. Antonio (or Anton or Antonin) Nevelus is most likely my husband's grandfather. If you have any information on this family, please send it to me. We are planning a trip to the area sometime in the near future and would like to know more about my husband's family. Thanks.

Researching: RABARA
Ahojte! I'm wondering, where the surname "Rabara" comes from. I know a little village in Slovakia, Horne Oresany, where the name is very common. My first ancestor I know, Mikulas Rabara, was born there around 1820 I think. But there are also very many Rabaras in Hawaii and the Philippines. Pretty strange. Maybe that there were two different sources, ending by "accident" in the same name? Yet I was also said that the name comes either from Spain or Croatia. Anyone knowing something more precise?

Researching: NOVAK, HORINKA, KOZAK, BARTAL, KOVASIK, MALIK, VLK, BURSKY, KOCAK, HUBANEC, TOMACEK, SOLARIK, KVALTIN, SHODA, MARTINKOVIC, HAVEL & SISKAL
I am researching the families of Novak and Horinka from the town of Gbely, Slovakia. Joannes (John) Novak b.1864 and Zuzanna (Susanna) Horinka b.1869 emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio. Zuzanna died in the 1918 flu epidemic, and John moved to West Point, Ohio, living with his son Englebert (Andy) and Andy's wife Stephania Horinka Novak. Stephania's mother was also from Gbely and was named Rose Horinka. She was probably born in the 1870's. I am looking for information on parents and siblings of John, Susanna, Rose and Stephania. I have birth records for about 50 Horinkas from Gbely that I collected in Bratislava in 1997. These birth records span the years from June 1882 to August 1895. I copied all the Horinka & Novak birth records from this period, that I found. I will gladly share the information I have. Other names that tie in with the Novaks & Horinkas by marriage are: Kozak, Bartal, Kovasik, Malik, Vlk, Bursky, Kocak, Hubanec, Tomacek, Solarik, Kvaltin, Shoda, Martinkovic, Havel & Siskal. The records also list house numbers and Godparents. I photographed the records and will be able to email you a scan of the original record.

Researching: HNAT, HAVRAN, SCSERBAK. SCERBAK, TATAR, ADAMOLESKA, AFTANAS, BUDZAK, KOTLINSZKY, VOROSZTKO
I am researching the Hnat family of Udol (Ujak) and the Havran family of nearby Matysova. Both villages are in the Spisske Magura, near Stara L'ubovna. My great-grandfather, Stefan Hnat, was born in Udol on 18 Dec. 1888, and emigrated to Passaic, N.J., when he was nine. He married in Passaic, in July 1908, Susanna Havran (Harvan), who was born 3 June 1889. She had emigrated to Passaic in 1905. Susanna Havran's father was Michael Havran, born 1842. Her mother was Mara Tatar, born 1863. Stefan Hnat's father was a blacksmith named Pavol Hnat, mladsi. His father was of course Pavol Hnat, starsi, also a blacksmith. Pavol Hnat mladsi's wife was Susanna Scserbak. Udol was part of the parish of Plavnica, where Stefan was baptized. Other lines that I am researching are Scserbak (Scerbak), for Stefan Hnat's mother was Susanna Scserbak; and Tatar, for Susanna Havran's mother was Maria Tatar (born 1863). Further back, names that crop up in my family lines in Udol and Matysova are Vorosztko; Budzak; Kotlinskzy; Aftanas, and Adamoleska. Anyone with any information on these families, or on the history of St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church in Matysova, or the Plavnica Roman Catholic parish in general, I'd love to hear from you! Many thanks! Na Zdar!
