Researching: SEMANCIK, SEMANICK
I have been researching my family name Semancik / Semanick for three
years. I have located at least 12 cousins, previously unknown to me,
throughtout the USA. I am visiting Olsov Slovakia in August 1998 in
hopes of finding more relatives. One male Semancik living in Olsov
remembers my great-uncle Balthasar, wife and three children leaving for
America in 1930. Hopefully I will be able to locate this individual and
obtain more information on my surname. Grandfather Carl John Semancik
immigrated in 1886 to Pennsylvania, moving to Montana and then to
Tennessee. He had four brothers and two sisters who also immigrated to
America settling in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The men all worked in coal
mines or steel mills. Any information on this sur-name is appreciated.

Researching: AMBRUS, KOCSIS, ZAKHAR
We are going to visit slovakia in June of 1999 and am very interested in
meeting some relatives there and in hungary. My grandmother was Mary
Ambrus, she was born in the city of Nyriegyhaza, Szabalcs Megye (county),
in Hungary on August 20th, 1904. her parents were John Ambrus and Mary
Kocsis, she had 8 brothers and sisters, 2 girls and 7 boys total. She came
to the U.S. in November of 1922 at the age of 18 and went to live with her
brother Andrew and his wife Bertha in East Chicago, Indiana. Two
years later, she married James Zakhar on November 24th,1924, in Indiana and
shortly after they moved to Burnside area of Chicago on Avalon, near 93rd
Street. James Zakhar was born in Gomor Megye (county), Hungary in the town
of Szilcea or which might be Silica now in slovakia on June 5th of 1892. He
came to the U.S. one and one half years before Mary's arrival. I believe my
grandfather served in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War One. He had a
tatoo on his left arm which had his name rank and everything else on it. I
would appreciate any help in connecting with any relatives. This site is
fantastic! Thanks.

POKUTA, ZMIJ
Researching Bakos, Csunik, Dudas, Gajdos, Ivancso, Klembarsky, Kropinyak,
Krupacs, Marinic, Marnicsak, Petras, Pokuta and Zmij
I am the grandson of Michael Marinic and Mary Bakos. I would like to contact
anyone researching any of the above mentioned names.
Michael Marinic was born in Snina on Sep 17 1875. His parents were Stefan
Marinic and Zuzana Gajdos. He had at least one brother and one sister. We
believe the brother, who remained is Slovakia, was named Stefan also. His
sister's name was Elizabeth. Some time after Elizabeth arrived in the US,
she married Jacob Bakos, the younger brother of Mary Bakos.
An "s" was added to the Marinic name after Michael arrived in the US. He
became a US citizen on Apr 2 1904 in Cambridge, OH.
Mary Bakos, Michael's wife, was the daughter of Stefan Bakos and Katrina,
Kropinyak. We believe Mary was born in Slovinky,
Slovakia on Jun 3 1882.
Mary and her parents migrated to the US where they arrived at Ellis Island
in 1886. She was became a US citizen in 1890.
Michael and Mary had 12 children. He passed away on Jan 25, 1962 in
Byesville, OH. Mary passed away in 1942 in Byesville, OH.
The Csunik, Dudas, Ivancso, Klembarsky, Kropinyak, Krupacs, Marnicsak
Petras, Pokuta and Zmij families all had ties to
Slovinky, Slovakia
Please contact me if you are researching any of these families so we can
exchange information. Thanks.

My husband's grandparents were Peter and Anna Mahalko and Frank and Anna
Hodowanic. Both families evidently started out in Pennsylvania before coming to
Wisconsin. They originated in the Carpathian Mountains and we've always wondered
just what nationality. . Ukranian? Austrian? Then I ran across the Carpatho-Russyn
history, and I believe that's where they fit in. Does anyone have information as to how
these people emigrated to America? What was their history? My husband's family
came in about 1900. We live about 2 miles from an Orthodox church. . . and I
think it's the oldest one in Wis. Evidently several families are from the Carpathian
Mountains. We haven't had much luck in geneological research farther back than the
settlers of about 1900. Names include Telisczyk; Voytovich; Cigan; Tyznik. I'd
appreciate any help you can give me.

I am searching for families with this surnames from ERDODKA, Slovakia. My great
grandfather from my father side was SANDOR MITERKO. He married Maria Pavel
Miterko in 1905 at Erdodka. His mother Maria Hladek was born in Erdodka
sometimes around 1860s. She came to U.S.A. in March 1908 probably together with
her two sons - Anthony Hladek, Jozeph Hladek and her daughter Mary Miterko
Srogon. They all settled down in 10.William St., Batavia, N.Y. Sandor Miterko went
to U.S.A. twice, but he returned to Slovakia and he died here after an accident. We
have lost contact with his relatives in U.S. I have done similar research on my
mother's side of my family. It was great! We became the best friends ever and we write
to each other every single week. I would appreciate any information that would help
me to find my relatives. I am planning to go to U.S.A. this coming summer and I might
be able to visit them if they would want me to. We do not know anything about
Sandor Miterko's father and where this surname comes from. Maria Hladek met
someone called Miterko in Hungary when she was a young girl. Their son Sandor was
born in Hungary. But Maria did not marry Miterko and she returned with her son to
Slovakia. We do not think there are any other Miterko families here in Slovakia except
those related to us. So, we would like to find more about this surname. If you know
any information about it or if your surname is Miterko, please do contact me.

Researching: HLADEK, SROGON, MITERKO
I am searching for families with those surnames from Erdodka, Slovakia.
My great grandfather from my father`s side was Sandor Miterko. He
married Maria Pavel Miterko in 1905 at Erdodka. His mother Maria Hladek
was born in Erdodka sometimes around 1860s. She came to U.S.A. in March
1908 probably together with her two sons - Anthony Hladek, Jozeph Hladek
and her daughter - Mary Miterko Srogon. They all settled down in 10
William St., Batavia, N.Y. Sandor Miterko went to U.S.A. twice, but he
returned back to Slovakia and he died here after an accident he had. We
have lost any contact to his relatives in U.S.
I have done a similar research form my mother side of my family. It was
great! We became the best friends ever and we write to each other every
single week. I would appreciate any information that would help me to
find my relatives. I am planning to go to U.S. this coming summer and I
might be able to visit them if they want me to.
We do not know anything about Sandor`s father and where this surname
comes from. Maria Hladek /I am not sure what her surname was before she
got married/ met a guy called Miterko someplace in Hungary. But Maria
would never married Miterko and she returned with her son back to
Slovakia. We do not think there are any other Miterko families here in
Slovakia except those related to us. So, we would like to find more
about this surname. If you have any information about it or if your
surname is Miterko, please do contact me. Thank you.

older sister, Mary Dvorocsik was married to John Hrobochak who was from
the area of Kosice. They emigrated to Poughkeepsie NY and later to
Barnesboro Pa. My father came over later approx 1910-12 and married
Mary Grega, whose father Michael Grega was from the area of Kosice. I'd
