Researching: GOODMAN, GLICK
I am searching for the surnames Goodman and Glick. Morris Glick was born in
Humona in either 1838 or 1840. This town was originally in northeast Hungary. He was
the uncle of Louis Goodman, who was born in1866, and I am assuming his family was
also from Humona. Goodman came to the U.S. in 1872 and Glick arrived in 1882. They
both ultimately settle in Cleveland, Ohio. Anyone having any information about Humona
or the surnames shown above please contact me.

Researching: CHORBA, ZDI, ZSDIJ, ZDI, DAY
I am looking for information on my maternal grandmother's family. Her name was Anna
Chorba, from Zemplinsky-Klecenov. Sources claim that her birthday was in October and
that she was born in 1878. She told me that she came to the United States alone when she
was 16 years old. She would not talk about any other experiences or family, except her
younger sister Elizabeth, for whom she and my grandfather sent. My grandfather, Michael
Zdi, could not read nor write in any language and so we are not sure of his surname's
spelling. It was alternately spelled Zsdij, Zdi, Zdj, and in many cases he was referred to as
Mike Day. He was Russian Orthodox and often talked of working as a young boy
shinning the boots of Cossacks. His family were wanderers and my grandmother referred
to them as gypsies. I don't know if they were or not, but I vaguely
remember meeting his sister and some other members of his family when I was very
young. It seems that he reported to the Greek Catholic Union that his his village of birth
was Trebosov. I would appreciate any information anyone might have that would help.

Researching: MERVA, LESKO, PIUCA, SOLTIS, PAVLICK,
MASKOVYAK, SEBEK, BARBUSHOK
A certain Joseph Merva, a tailor by trade, was married to a woman, name
unknown. This occurred somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains, probably
near Koj'shov. From this union a son, Joseph Merva, was born. However,
shortly after the birth, the woman died. The son was then taken by the
woman's family to be raised and the senior Joseph Merva remarried with a
certain Anna Lesko, most likely in the town of Koysov, (pronounced
Koishov). From Anna Lesko's birth certificate which I have, I find that
she was born on July 26, 1862, of Adam Lesko and Mary Piuca (pronounced
Piucha). Interestingly enough, her godmother was a Mary Merva, I believe,
the Aunt of Michael Merva from Buffalo, Ohio. From this union, a
daughter, Mary (Merva) Soltis was born. You will find this branch of the
Merva name again when I talk about my Mother's family.
The father, the senior Joseph, died and his twin brother John then married
Anna (Lesko) Merva. John was my grandfather and his picture, together with
Anna (Lesko) Merva is hanging on the wall near the fireplace in the family
room at 1613 Colorado Drive in East Lansing. This is the same picture that
appears in the book, Cocoon, the history of the Slovaks in Guernsey County,
Ohio written by the History Professor from Muskingham College in New
Concord, Ohio. From this union was born by father, John Merva junior, Anna
(Merva) Pavlick, Theresa (Merva) Maskovyak, and Peter Merva, all born in
Czechoslovakia, and Mary (Merva) Sebek and Helen (Merva) Barbushok, born
here in the United States. Apparently Peter Merva died very young while
the remaining family members were together here in the United States prior
to the time they got married and left home. I will briefly mention that,
while I was growing up in Ohio, Anna Pavlick lived near Cumberland, Ohio on
a farm while the half sister Mary Soltis lived in Terre Haute, Indiana, and
Teresa Maskovyak resided in Portage, Pennsylvania. Helen Barbershok lived
in Cleveland as did Mary Sebek, who died when I was about 7 years old of
leukemia. My Dad, John, was born in Koj'sov and baptized in the Greek Catholic
Church in Koj'shov on January 30, 1887, coincidentally, that was also the
day he was born. As far as I know, he never attended school unless it was
prior to his first 9 years of life. When he was 9, his father, John
senior, emigrated to the United States with the understanding that he would
earn enough money to have the rest of the family join him. It appears that
he either saved all the money he earned, or drank the excess when he
discovered how delicious the American whisky was because Dad was forced to
go to work in the copper mines when he was 9 years old to support his
mother and 3 sisters. This he did for 4 long years, walking from home to
the mines about 20 kilometers distant carrying his week's food consisting
of bacon and bread and whatever else was available. He toiled in the mines
during the week, cooking his own meals and sleeping in the bunkhouse until
Saturday when he returned home with his paycheck which he gave to his
mother.

Komorom, unsure of current area. My grandfather was in the calvary in the
army special guard. They immigrated to NYC in 1906. I am interested in
finding out any information regarding my relatives. Thank you.

you could give would be greatly appreciated. In addition, I would be
happy to share what information I have gathered on the Szigeti family.

Frank Lisy married Mary (don't know maiden name or year of marriage) and had
5 children. Lived in Hahntown, Pennsylvania until death in mid-late 50's.

Researching: GUBA, PLEVETSKY
Looking for any information on the family name Guba from Nagy Ida (now
Velka Ida, Slovakia). My great-grandmother, Mari Guba was born May 5,
1891; parents Anna and Miklos Guba. Anna and Miklos had two other
children, Andras and Ferenz. Mari married Stephen Plevetsky on June 27,
1910 and emigrated to the USA in the fall of 1914. They settled in PA.
It is believed that Andras or Ferenz emigrated to Canada.
