Researching: SINAY, SZINAJ, PARUSCH, PANKUCH, KALMARI
If anyone can help me with anything. This is the information I have: The Sinay family, Adam Szinaj and Pauline (Paruch or Pankuch ?) Szinaj lived on a ranch near Kassa, Hungary. (now Kosice, Slovakia) (2 miles out (1 mile = 4 miles in America)) The ranch had about 20 acres of open land and 5 to 10 acres of timber. Another town, Eperjes (now Presov, Slovakia) was about 2 miles west. They shopped mostly at Kassa. Their children were Alexander, Shandor, in Hungarian, August, Mary, "Irma", Anthony, Helena, Ilonka, and other children, some not remembered. There were twins that died in the cradle at the same time. Tony had a twin brother that died at about 10 years old. About 2 years before the family came to America. Pauline had two Toni and August. August was a Lutheran minister. Toni was a high rating Army Officer and a goldsmith by trade. Pauline's sisters were Hermina, Christine, Hormine, probably 4 sisters in all. Hermina may have been married to an organist by sir name of Kalmari. Hermina and husband lived in Abos, about 1 mile from the ranch. All, above mentioned, attended church in Abos. The youngest sister married a tinsmith a few years before the Szinaj's came to America. They lived in Kassa. Hermina's husband was badly injured falling from a ladder while roofing a church. Tony Szinaj remembers clearly the visits and meals at the tinsmiths home. Hormine lived near Aperjes and had a salt factory. They pumped water from a well and extracted the salt. All of the Kalmari family got salt from here. Hormine's children were one boy, (Igos or Ijos or Ijas) and 3 or 4 sisters, Adelia. Thank you for helping me.

We know that both of my grandparents are of Slovak ancestry. Their surnames were Stefura and Matalik. But we do not know what part of Slovakia to even begin looking for these names. Both of my grandparents were born in Western Pennsylvania near Burgettstown. We also have relatives in Ohio. Please any help you could give would be great.

Researching: LESKO, SHIMKO, LESLIKO, LESHKO, STEFANKO, VLASAC, SEPEC SHIPEK, POLIVKA, MACEJ
My father is John G Lesko, born in Windber PA July 1, 1909. He married Mildred Shimko, born October 27, 1913. They were married in Windber PA on April 13, 1937. There were 7 children. He died May 17th, 1964. Mildred Lesko died January 5, 1998. John G Lesko's father is listed on his birth certificate as John Lesliko, was 27 years old at the time, and his birthplace is listed as Austria, but I have recently discovered that he was from Vlahy, in the county of Spis, which is Slovak. John Lesko was previously married to Maria Macej, Linglar, Saris, in 1906, and had a daughter named Helen. He eventually married Mary Stefanko. John G Lesko's mother was Mary Stefanko Lesko. She was born in Austria August 28 1882 and died in Windber PA on 5 May, 1952. She was previously married to a man named Vlasac. She came to the United States on 1899, and came to Windber in 1901. Researching: SABOLIK, BAKALAR, MITAL, VERCHIMAK
I am researching my great grandparents Jan and Susan Bakalar Sabolik, who immigrated to the U.S., settling in the Streator, Illinois, area prior to 1889. Jan was born ca. 1850, and married probably prior to 1883. They were parents to John, Andrew, Mike, George, Susan, Anna, and Mary Sabolik. My grandmother, Mary Sabolik, was the youngest, and the only one of the seven children born in the U.S. Mary Sabolik married John Mital of Streator, Illinois in 1908. Her father Jan Sabolik, a naturalized U.S. Citizen, was killed in a railroad accident (I assume in Streator), in February 1901. Her mother, Susan Bakalar Sabolik, died in Streator in February 1906. Andrew Mital was born ca. 1840 or earlier in the Slovakia area. He married Anna Verchimak. Only one of their children is known, that being Andrew Mital, born March 03, 1856, in Slovakia, marrying Susan Marko of Luzany. The younger Andrew, from Zeleznik, immigrated to the U.S. ca. 1900, deserting his wife and children, locating in the Streator, Illinois, area. I do not know if the older Andrew and his wife Anna Verchimak immigrated or not. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Seeking ancestry or any information on George Szabol and his wife, Maria (Katona was her maiden name), who immigrated to Hazleton, Pa. in the late 19th century. They also lived in Rankin, Pa. and were the parents of Janos (John) Szabol, and possibly of Pauline and returned to Europe about 1899. Also researching Josef Zosczak, husband of Maria (Szabo) Zosczak who came to McKeesport, Pa. and also believed to have emigrated back. Their daughter, Anna, married already mentioned John Szabol at Rankin, Pa., 1/21/1915, while, it is believed, her paternal aunt, another Anna Zosczak, married another John Szabol (relationship unknown) in 1885. The latter 2 were from Benkovce. Another village of origin appearing on a 1915 marriage record was something like "Kasavargas, Hungary", probably a mispronunciation or poor translation.

Researching: SANDOR
My great-grandfather Sandor was from Lubenik, Gemerska. Here's what I know about Lubenik based on pre-WWI maps (I think the village may have been destroyed in WWII). Lubenik was in the province of Gemerska, on the western border of the province. The village is west of Kosice and east of the rivers Vychodny Juriec and the Muran river. The province Gemerska is directly north of the Hungarian province of Borsodska, east of Malohontska and west of Turnianska. The problem I have always had with being a Sandor is finding out the Slavic origin of the name. Sandor is a Hungarian name, although my grandmother claims that it originated as Slovak in the 900s or so before Slovakia came under foreign rule, whereupon the Magyars took Slovak words and names until they became known as Hungarian. Another option is that during the nineteenth century the family name was "Magyarized" (forcibly changed to a Hungarian-sounding name) during the Hapsburg reign when Slovaks were members of a persecuted minority. I've taken some good-natured flack from friends about being a closet Hungarian but I am serious about finding out the story behind having a Hungarian name and being, as far as I can tell, solidly Slovak. Do you have any suggestions, facts or stories? I'm more interested in the origin of the family name than finding out info about the villages.

Am looking for information about the following names: Baca (my mother, Elizabeth, born 03/06/22 in Sastinske Straze), Viskupic (my father, Ernest, born in PA, USA, raised in a place called "Ruzova Dolina" outside of Trnava) and Suchy ( many aunts and uncles, unsure of region/town). Spent the summer of '66 in Slovakia, traveling with my mom. Loved the place, didn't want to come home, but did miss McDonald's! Unfortunately, both of my parents are gone, relatives are getting older, and I could kick myself now for never having paid attention to my heritage. Better late than never, though. Thanks in advance for any info!

Researching: OCHOTNICKA, OCHOTNICKY, GAZDAGOVA, KONTROVACZOVA, RYSTWAI, JENCO, HOLLER
My wifes family comes from Kosice, Slovakia. Her maiden name is Jenco, and both her parents come from Kosice. Her mother's maiden name is Holler - and again is from Kosice - although we feel that there is probably a German-Slovak connection. Other names that we are connected to are Ochotnicka or Ochotnicky from Hniezdne, Gazdagova, Kontrovaczova, and Rystwai.

Researching: MACEJ, TOMASKOVIC
My father's family came from Kosice (bela). My father's father, who was born May 25, 1900, was named Frank (Americanized his first name) Macej. My father's mother, who was born December 8, 1904 was named Maria Tomaskovic. They had three children while in Slovakia (part of Czechoslovakia at the time). My grandfather came over to the U.S. in 1929 and my grandmother (who was pregnant with my father so they wouldn't let her come over with my grandfather) came over with my father (Ondrej) and his two older siblings, Frank and Maria, in 1936. I know we must have many relatives living in Slovakia as my grandfather was one of 10 (I think) children and my grandmother was one of 4 children. I would very much appreciate e-mail from any of my relatives there.

Researching: GULDAN, HRUSOVSKY
I know little of my family roots other than they were from Czechoslovakia; they came to America around 1905-1910 to West Virginia via New York where they lived for a few years. My Grandfather's name was John Guldan and his wife (my grandmother) was Magdalene (Hrusovsky) Guldan, d/b 1892. This is my first effort to learn about my family and I'm planning a trip to visit the country in 12-18 months.

Researching: GRIGLAK
Any info on the Griglak family/farmers from Lubica (or Lubic or Libc), Slovakia on the outskirts of Kezmarok would be appreciated. Family of Martin and Veronica lived there around 1880 to 1908 and then most emmigrated to New Jersey, USA. Government took over the family farm when Veronica died. Children's names were Carrie, Agnes, Vincent, Mary, Anna and Joseph. They were likely Roman Catholic and mostly German was spoken in the region. Any info on the area during that period would also be of help. Thank you.

Researching: TIMKO, VALIGA, LESKO
I did some web research the other day in an attempt to find out info about my great grandmother ("Baba") and her family. I came across your web site and address, and am mailing you in an effort to find info about her and her town. She came over in 1902 at age 16, from what was Austria Hungary and is now Slovakia. She settled in Pittsburgh, PA. Her maiden name was Anne (or Anna) Timko. She married a Valiga, was widowed at a young age, and later married a Lesko. The town she was from was called, I believe, "Hataloa" or "Hatalova" - this is how it is pronounced, I do not know for sure how it is spelled. I also remember my Gramma mentioning "Checheho" or something like that... Baba's father or grandfather was the mayor (or head of the town - not sure what he would have been called actually) of the village/town she was from. Her family raised horses for the Cavalry, I am told. Also, she traveled back and forth a number of times (maybe 5 or so) from her hometown, to Pittsburgh. I have emailed a few other people I found on the web, about my search. Several people told me to try to find a contact at a University in Slovakia, some told me to try to find info about Ellis Island records, others told me to look through old Church records... We are Byzantine Catholics. If you are aware of her hometown or any universities near it, and could point me in a direction to find it, I would be very grateful. I would be very interested in visiting her hometown, and seeing the churches there, the countryside, etc. If you can be of any help at all it would be greatly appreciated!! I would also be interested in learning about the history of the area - if there are any places you could direct me to, I would be very happy!! Thank you!

Researching: DANKANYIN, DANKANIN, BUSANIC
My Grandfather Michael Dankanyin was from Topolany, Eastern Slovakia. He married Mari Busanic. They were Carpatho-Ruysn Orthodox Christians throughout their lives. They arrived in the United States about 1900 and settled in Farrell, Pennsylvania. There are Dankanyin's living in Petrovse, Slovakia. The spelling on the original name was Dankanin with the Y being added during the Austro-Hungarian Empire to make the name appear more Hungarian.
