Researching: DERNER, KARABINOS, NEGOSH
My grandfather, John N. Negosh, died in a mining fire in 1911, in Nanticoke,
PA. He was married to Susan Karabinos, the daughter of Anna Derner and
George Karabinos. John was born in 1869, according to his death certificate, in
Austria. But family legend says that he was from Hermanovice and another
says that they lived in Budapest before arriving in America. Susan arrived in
America in 1896, at the age of 17 or so. She had her first child, my uncle Joseph
in 1900. My father, Nicholas, was born in 1909. Between them were Elizabeth,
Heinie, and Mary Johanna. The baby of the family, Frances, was born after her
father's death in 1911. Any help on locating this family in Slovakia, Hungary, or
Austria would be much appreciated. Visit the Ancestry.com

Charles Louie and Susan Louie (nee Dzatko). They were from Austria Hungary and
they were Slovak. My grandfather came to this country around 1883 and my

Researching: FALATKO, METRO, STEFANIK
Hello - my grandfather, John Stefanik, was reportedly born in a small village named
Presov or perhaps Luscov in the late 1800s and eventually emigrated to the coal
mining areas of eastern Pennsylvania. After marriage, his family eventually settled
in a small Pennsylvania mining town named Sandy Run, PA where John worked in
the mines his entire life. He died in the mines of a heart attack while in his early 60s.
His wife was Anna Metro whom I believe he met after settling in Pennsylvania.
They eventually had several children, the youngest of whom, Edmund, was my
father. Edmund was born in 1924 in Sandy Run and eventually married
Eleanor Falatko of Freeland, PA around 1947. Edmund and Eleanor eventually
moved to New Jersey where they raised myself and my sister, Janice, in the towns of
Newark and Union. My father, Edmund, still lives in Union, NJ where he will turn 84
years of age this summer (2007). I had at one time seen a copy of my Grandfather's
birth certificate, but unfortunately do not possess it any longer. I recall the small
villages noted on it were Presov and perhaps Luscov (?). But, unfortunately I cannot
locate the specific towns or modern day countries where these may be located. I
know that my family has always noted that they were "Slovak" by origin, but knowing
that countries and their borders have changed many times over the years, I have
never been certain as to where or which country my grandfather emigrated from. I
believe he eventually entered the US via Baltimore or somewhere in Maryland,
rather than via Ellis Island. Unfortunately, I do not have specific details of his
immigation process or any records of same. I thank you so much for your time, and
would be most thankful for any information - even hints or guesses - which you might
provide as to my grandfather's legacy. Please feel free to email me. Best regards form

Researching: LACZKO, ONDA, URBAN, MAGYAR, BENO, PALAGYI
My story begins in Lelesz Hungary.
John Laczko (1815-1855) & Julianna Kirale (1819-1861) of Lelez Slovakia (then
Hungary) had children;
Anna (1840), Imrich (1844-1886), Julianna (1848-1886), Rozalia (1851), John
(1854). John Laczko married Maria Onda (1856) in 1877 as recorded in the
Greek Catholic Church in Polony. They had children; Andrej Ladislav (1877), John
(1879), Joseph Pavol (1881-1882), Mikulas (1882), Rozalia (1885), Jozef
(1886-1890).
I would like to know what happened to Anna and Rozalia the daughters of John
and Julianna? What children did Anna, Imrich, Julianna, Rozalia have? What
happened to Rozalia the daughter of Marie and John?
John & Marie and three boys (Andrej became Louis, John, Michael) came to
Conneaut, Ohio, USA. Can you tell me when they left Leles?
Can you give me more information on Maria Onda? Who were her parents,
brothers and sisters?
Andrej Ladislav became Louis and married Veronica Urban daughter of Stephen
Urban and Maria Magyar of Leles. Can you find more information about other
children they had? Who were their parents? I suspect a Maria Beno also of
Leles was Veronica's sister?
There is also a Palagyi family from Leles who moved to Conneaut. Were they
related? Any other relatives out there? Please respond.

Researching: BEDNARIK, STRANYAK, STRANATKA, VALESKO
I too am currently looking at my family's genealogy. My grandmother's name was Anna (Stranyak) Valesko. Her mother's name was Maria Bednarik. I remember my grandmother (Anna - we called her Baba) telling me about how beautiful her mother (Maria/Mary) was. She said she had long black hair and was tall and slender. My grandmother (Anna) was born in Republic, PA in 1898 but traveled back to her "old country" as a child and then back to the US. She had a brother name Andy and Paul and sisters, Mary and Dora Stranyak. My grandfather Andrew Valesko was from Hungry (I believe) and I understand that before he came to America, he worked as a grounds keeper for a King during the 1800's. He spoke several languages and saved enough money to come to America. My grandmother said when they were first married she had persian carpets, flow through/blue china, leather furniture. He was an engineer on the railroad after he came to America. The depression came and he lost his job and
went to work in the mines. I am hoping to find more info about my grandmother, great grandmother and grandfathers.

Researching: KREHLIK, KOCHIS
I have a bit of digging to do to find a paper my father gave me with some information,
but for now I'd like to post what I know. My grandfather's name was Andrew Krehlik
and he came to America via Ellis Island from what was Czechoslovakia , settling
in Western Pennsylvania, I do not yet know the year. Probably early 1900's. He had
made a friend who had a sister who wanted to come to America and my grandfather
paid a dowry for her and her passage, her name was Anna Kochis. They married and
lived in Loyalhanna, Pennsylvania until their deaths in the 1960's. My father spoke
Slovak, English, and Russian; and was the one who wrote letters to the family in
Czechoslovakia. They had to await the Russian Orthodox priest's visit once a month
for translation. There was a cousin who visited them in Loyalhanna before World War II
or during it who returned to Czechoslovakia and whom they never heard from again.
As she was blind, they feared she may have met with extermination. It was not until
my father was quite elderly that he shared with me that if he had the money he'd have
loved to have gone to find out what happened to his family members. As I may be
visiting in the fall, I'd love to find out what I can. The village name my father mentioned was Presov. I may have the girl's name, I believe her last was Kochis. (My father always felt the spelling of the names may have been altered or "Americanized."
