I am researching my maternal grandparents, Victoria Petrick, who came from the Michalovce region of Slovakia and Michael Vargo. She was born in 1888 or 1889 and he was born about 1879. I believe she came as a child to the US and settled in Perth Amboy, N. J. I know nothing about his family. They were supposedly married there in Holy Trinity Church, about 1906. He died in 1916 when my mother was 2 years old. The Slovak spelling at his burial site is Michaly Varga. My mother's maiden name was Vargo. If anyone has any information on this region, or where I can search, I would greatly appreciate it.

Researching: HORINKO, HABANEC, VERES, KOLARICK
I am researching my husband's maternal grandparents. His grandmother was Stella Horinko and she was born in Pennsylvania, probably Luzerne County. She grew up in the Hazleton area. She was born 1911and died in 1969. Her mother was Elizabeth Habanec, and her father was John Horinko. I don't know anything about them. They had 7 or 8 children. I would like to find out from what region of Slovakia they came, or if anyone has information on the surnames and where they may have come from. I think they came to the U.S. in the early 1900's. I would like to find any other relatives that can help me, as I don't know if they had brothers, sisters, etc. His maternal grandfather was John Veres, and we know very little about him. He came to the U. S. as a teenager. He was born between 1900-1903. He was from Hungary. He married Stella Horinko in 1927, probably in Hazleton, Pa. They settled in Ebervale, Pa. and I believe he was a coal miner. We are also wondering about the surname Veres, and what region that could have come from. Apparently, John Veres had sisters in Johnstown, Pa. Area. Any help will be appreciated.

Researching: BASHAN
My father was Grigorij Bashan, born 3/17/1896 in the Poltava area. He claims to have been "White Russian". He was married previously and had 3 children, 1 boy Victor, (he would me mid to late 60's and probably still in Ukraine) and 2 girls, Aascia, and Beancia. I know the spelling has to be wrong. My mother, Klavdia Harbar (Harabar) was from either Odessa or Zitomer, I think they may have had relatives in Kiev. They sailed from Hamburg, Germany in February of 1950, arriving at Ellis Island on 20 February 1950 aboard the General Sturgis. They had 3 girls. Bashan is a hard name to research and any help is appreciated. I do not know the names of any other family members. Everybody was sent to a camp or lost contact during the war.

A brother of Jan, Michal Zemko, immigrated in 1907 and after staying briefly in Lebanon, Pa. finally settled in Coaldale, Pa. where he was killed in a coal mine explosion in 1934.
