Researching: PELEGRIN, BELEGRIN, OLEXO, ALEXO, ALEX
My grandfathers name was Joseph Pelegrin or Belegrin and was born in
Pany Hungary 27 January 1889 his fathers name was John Pelegrin or
Belegrin and was married to Anna Halasz, to my knowledge both were from
Pany, Hungary (present day Panvce, Slovakia. My great grandfather had
two living children Joseph born 27 January 1889 and Mary born about
1885, both were born in Pany. His wife (maiden name Anna Halasz died
at child birth around 1893 with her second son). They were Catholic and
the church that they attended burned down but I do not know the name of
the church other than it was in Pany. The reason for the confusion of
the name is that it was changed from Pelegrin to Belegrin but I do not
know when this happened. My great grandfather John Pelegrin (Belegrin)
was born 25 May 1861. My grandfather used to correspond with our family
in Pany (Panvce) but he died in 1966 and we do not have the records of
the address or names of the relative he wrote to. My great grandfather
and grandfather emigrated from Pany, Hungary in the 1880's or 1890's. I
am sure that some of our relatives in Slovakia are on the internet and
have e-mail capabilities and hope to be able to correspond with them.
Thank you for your time. May God bless you and your family, greetings from North Pole, Alaska.

Researching: POPOVEC, SCHERBA
I am trying to find my family from the city of Dubova near the Carpathian
Mountains. My Great Grandfather Michal Popovec married Kristina (Christena)
Scherba from Chomutova?. They had, I believe, 3 children. All 3 are
supposed to have come to the USA. The 2 older ones are supposed to have
gone to Pennsylvainia, New Jersy, or Ohio. The youngest Andrej Popovec
(1902), my Grandfather, came across on the Cunnard line with his wife Anna
(Cocula) Popovec (1907) with their son Andrej (2years old) in 1936 and moved
to Flint, Michigan. The immigration office added a "Z" to their last name
chaning it to be Popovecz, so it "looked more American". Both men went by
the name of Andrew as a Sr. and a Jr. with no middle name. In flint, Andrew
and Anna had a girl, Mary. If anyone has any information please contact me.

Researching: FERGAS, FORGAC, FORGACH, VOLOSIN, GUTTERIK
I was always told that my grandmother was Czechoslovakian. I must claim ignorance
in all this and hope you will bear with me. This is what I know so far:
My grandmother, Anna Susan Fergus (Forgac/Forgach) was born the daughter of
Michael Volosin and Maria Guttercik Volosin in 1892 in Udva Zemplin Hungary.
Like many, I'm confused if I should say I am of Czechoslovakian heritage or
Hungarian. Anna married John Forgac(later in America, Fergus) who was from
Krompach Spisska Zupa, Slovakia. What is the difference between saying your're Slovak or you're
Czechoslovakian? Please forgive me for this question. Is it that if you're
Czech, you're from the Czech Republic and if you're Slovak, you're from
Slovakia? I printed a Slovakia map from your site which is divided into
quandrants or a graph-like map which was helpful to very much. I guess I
need to know where I can find an actual map which would show the above
mentioned towns in the late 1800s when my grandparents were born to give me
an exact idea of where they were born. Where can I find one?
I'm looking to find out how I can find birth certificates, marriage
certificates, etc. for the names of Forgac(Forgach) of Krompachy, the
Volosins of Udva-Zemplin Hungary, and Guttercik of Udva-Zemplin Hungary. Any
help you can give me would be appreciated. Is there such a thing as an
electronic mailing list for these areas, etc.? I belong to one for Glamorgan
County Wales searching my mother's side of the family and find it so helpful.
Perhaps this is the same type of thing. I'm sure I'll be asking many more questions. Thanks in advance for helping
an amateur researcher.

Researching: HUKULICH, HOTCHKULICH, HUCKULICH, DUHANICH
I am trying to locate my parents families who were supposed to have come from Starina. The spelling of the
last name could be Hukulich, Hotchkulich, Huckulich. Parents George and Mary
(Duhanich) Hackulich. Came to the USA late 1800 or early 1900, moved to
Tobyhanna, Pa, settled in Endicott, N.Y., both deceased. My father, George Hackulich
(Hackulic) married my mother Mary Duhanich in
Eastern Slovakia some where in the area of Snina or Starina from what we
heard from their friends. They never talked about their lives in Slovakia.
They settled in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania and later moved to Endicott, New York
where they both are buried. It would be very nice if I could find some
family.
