Researching: SVACH, SLABY, URBAN
Looking for a Frank Svach (one source suggested he may have been born
Frantisek Slaby). He was married to a Marie (maiden name unknown).
They had a daughter Mary who immigrated with them to Texas in 1879 (at
age 4-5), another daughter Klara (my maternal grandmother) born on
passage. We know Klara's husband (Peter Karl Urban) came from Moravia &
on a census list Klara also listed herself as from Moravia, but our
family story is that she was born in neutral waters en route to Texas in
1879. So it is certainly possible that the Mary Svach born in Zemplen,
Austria in 1874 was my great-aunt. Looking for any and all information.

Researching: KATOS, BAKALYAR, BAKALAR, WASKO
I am researching my great-great grandparents John and Anna (Katos?) Bakalyar and Andrew
and Mary (Wasko) Bakalar. Both families apparently immigrated from Austria and settled
in Streator, LaSalle, Illinois prior to 1889. Andrew was a sole proprietor of a Saloon in
Streator. Andrew and Mary's daughter Margaret married John and Anna's son Thomas about 1913.
But, Thomas and Margaret took on her surname "Bakalar". I don't have much information about
any of them prior to Thomas and Margaret. But, I know there was a large "Slovik" settlement
in Streator around the time of their arrival. John and Anna's family, I believe, moved to
Minnesota later. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Researching: SULIK, HASEK, PAVELKA, TALAFOUS
I share your interest in Slovakia and our ancestry. I know my mother's side.
She came from Kubachy (now Spisske Bystre, Okres Poprad I've been there
twice) and my uncle traced Sulik back to 1776; however, my father's side is a
mystery. My paternal grandmother was a Hasek and the village of my father's
birth, Hlivistia, has Haseks and Pavelkas, all distantly related. Now my
grandfather is another story. His name was Josef Talafous and he was born
around 1856. He was involved in a battle somewhere in the area, I assume,
probably in 1880. He married Anna who was 15, and he was 25. He died in
1905. My father, Karol, was born 6-19-02--he thought July. My brother sent
me my father's birth record from Kosice. My grandmother left Slovakia in
1907 with five older children and left the three youngest in Hlivistia. My
father was raised by the Pavelkas.
That is all we know. I did read of an ancestor Jan Talafus, circa 1450, who
was a heitman in Bohemia and I had the gist of his life translated from Czech
to English. We have Talafouses in the States who arrrived in the 1850's for one was a
guard for General Grant in the Civil War. I have contacted them but they
don't know what town the Talafouses are from. That's why I need your help. I would appreciate
any insight you have. If you can't help, I would still enjoy communicating
with you about Slovakia.

Researching: USACK
My maiden name was Usack. One of my great uncles was born in Prague, but
the family has what has been described as a Slovak name. Unfortunately,
the spelling has been a big impediment to research, as it was changed
when the family came to the US about 1900 (?). I haven't been able to
find any information at all, partially as a result of this spelling
alteration. Would anyone care to give suggestions as to what the
original name might have been? Husak comes to mind, but I am not
familiar with Slovakian family names, so don't know what else might be
a possibility.

Researching: BARNA, TRELLA, ARTIN, MICENKO, RABATIN
I am looking for information regarding my grandparents. My grandmother's name was Ilya Barna,
born 19 June 1900. She had 4 sisters, Marie, Ola, Paraska, (I'm afraid I don't know the 4th
sisters name, she died at an early age) and one brother Joseph. Her family came from a small
village outside of Svidnik and she made mention of the Tatre Mountains. Ilya, Marie, and
Joseph immigrated to the United States; Ilya and Marie to New Jersey, Joseph to New Cocksville,
Pennsylvania. There are two still surviving sisters, Paraska and Ola still in Slovakia.
Paraska was married to Michael Artim and have a son Michael. Marie married Andrew Micenko
in the United States. Ilya married John Trella in the United States.
My grandfather, John Trella was born in Tuxedo Park, New York on July 5, 1905, and returned to
Slovakia when he was 3. He came back to the United States when he was 17 and resided in
Woodland, Maine before moving to New Jersey. I know that his mother's maiden name was Rabatin. Ilya and John had one daughter, Anne, my mom. John had a brother Michael who stayed in the old country.
