Putting a kerchief on someone's head and handing them a broom seems to be an Americanized versions of more elaborate customs in Slovakia. There the bride and groom are given a taste of honey (for the sweetness in life) and then the dish is dropped (symbolizes the sadness in life) and the groom gets the broom to sweep up the pieces -as many pieces as there are means how many children the couple will have.

I know the custom of putting money in someone's apron is done at Slovak- American wedding receptions in America - I never saw it in Slovakia. Does anyone know if it happens there?
