These selections translated to English by Helene Turkewicz-Sanko span nine centuries, from the twelfth to the twentieth.

The lyrics embody the unique Ukrainian voice of personal emotions against the backdrop of slavery at the hands of the Tartars and Turks, serfdom under the czsarist regime, and political constraints in more recent years.

Among the poets included are Marusia Churai, Ivan Kotliarevskyi, Taras Shevchenko, Ivan and Lesia Ukrainka.
