Male Chorus Presentation of The Bethlehem Carolers in Old Slavonic
VHS Video $16.95

Since Medieval times, many European cultures developed dramatic reenactments of the story of the shepherds' first encounter with the newborn Christ Child. Largely propagated by Franciscan Monks, as these "Mystery Plays" spread, each nation interpreted the basic themes through the medium of its own culture and heritage.

Our parents and grandparents had a profound faith which was tempered with holy simplicity and thus the reflection of the Bethlehem Carolers (Jaslickari - Gubi). Dependent upon the custom of the European village from whence it came, the Carolers adopted either a purely religious theme or one combining the Gospel message with light-hearted comedy.

The Eastern Christian tradition of our Carpatho-Rusyn people became rich and varied in each of our forefather's villages and was performed from house-to-house and passed on from generation-to-generation.

This Heritage of depicting the Nativity Play is considered by cultural experts to be the most expressive form of creative folk-art and our presentation, herein offered, combines drama, comedy, the Carpatho-Rusyn spoken word and song in four-part harmony.
